The birth of Archipelago

Go back to Archipelago Home

This site is a joint effort by members of a Swedish family, their grandparents, children, in-laws and friends, all with sailing and archipelagoes on their minds. We are now all hard at work in order to pull together and publish all our collective knowledge about archipelagoes. We think that the Web is the best place to put it all; one place, one site, available to all of us, and to all others with an interest in archipelagoes.

The information can also be of benefit to those of us who do not travel on our own keels. Many archipelagoes can be reached by car or public transportation, and the information therefore cover areas like living, eating, sights, inter-island transportation and other things of importance to the visitor and vacation planner.

Since this is a first cut, and since we are many who are contributing, you can expect inconsistencies (at this stage we are emphasizing facts over form). You can also expect to find that many archipelagoes still lack data, but we can assure you that this will change. For example: one of us is presently on a round-the-world cruise in his yacht and is submitting data from his laptop whenever he gets to a harbour with an Internet café. Another friend of ours is presently yachting in New Zealand fjords and he is collecting data too. The oldest son is making English translations, the wife and in-laws are busy entering data, and our grandmother is searching grand daddy´s archives for old loggbooks from yachting in Scandinavian archipelagoes.

Our ambition is to develop the consistancy of the graphics and the languages of the site so that we all can enjoy its information, both in Swedish and in English and some time in the future also in German. Many new archipelagoes are on its way to the site and will be included in coming months.

Having thousands of visitors from outside the family, we hope to encourage local entrepreneurs and businesses to take advantage of our site for publishing and advertising purposes. Such engagement will give us the means to further develop the site with hired professional help.

Browsing and downloading is free for all. Any local entrepreneur who happens to stop by and is attracted by our high visitor rates, may register, link, publicize or advertise for a very low fee, as to cover only our operating expenses for his participation.
