Cream of the Crop

Ilmarine Residence
Põhja 23, tel. 614 09 00, fax 614 09 01, www.ilmarine.com, ilmarine@domina.ee

This old limestone industrial building has maintained a stark masculinity inside and out - with exposed metal beams and a cold grey colour scheme. All but two rooms are double suites, built on two levels, with a separate sitting area downstairs. The hotel represents the first stage in the construction of an Italian-designed exclusive residential area. Planning to spending a lot of time in Tallinn? Consider buying your favourite hotel room for your personal use. Or check out the model apartments next door. Prices are given as regular/weekend rates.

48 suites (19 standard class 1400/1260EEK for one, 1600/1440EEK for two; 22 superior class 1800/1620EEK for one, 2000/1800EEK for two; 7 deluxe rooms 2200/1980EEK for one, 2400/2160EEK).

Grand Hotel Mercure Tallinn
Toompuiestee 27, tel. 667 70 00, fax 667 70 01.

You wouldn't even recognise the old Hotell Tallinn now. The grey Intourist facade has been replaced by pink neon signs declaring the hotel's affiliation with the French Accor chain. Doormen in livery will usher you into a sweeping foyer and a glass elevator will whisk you to your room - all in an opulent world that sharply contrasts the usual Estonian sobriety.

164 rooms (standard class: singles1500 - 1900EEK, doubles 1700 - 2100EEK; business class: singles 1700 - 2100EEK, doubles 1900 -2400EEK, junior suites2300 - 2700EEK, with sauna 2800 - 3500EEK, presidential suites 5000 -6200EEK, extra bed 300EEK, pets 100EEK).

Metropol
Mere 8b, tel. 667 45 55/667 45 00, fax 667 46 00.

Tallinn's newest luxury hotel popped up seemingly out of the blue among the old limestone warehouses near the harbour. While the eight-storey glass building itself gets lost in these tight back alleys, the floor plan inside is both grand and open. Every room has a view - whether of the harbour, Old Town, the backs of disused warehouses or the building's interior courtyard. To pamper yourself, ask for one of the many rooms with private saunas. This is one of the first hotels in Estonia to have Pay-TV.

150 rooms (128 doubles 1400EEK, suites 2600EEK, doubles with sauna 1700EEK).

Olümpia
Liivalaia 33, tel. 631 53 15/631 53 33, fax 631 56 75, hotell@olympia.ee

Although originally built for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, the Olümpia has left its Intourist days - and most of Tallinn's other hotels - well behind. Professional, personal service and attention to detail are the hallmarks of the Reval Hotel Chain and this, their luxury hotel, certainly leads the pack in that regard. Request a view of Old Town or the harbour when you make your reservation. Non-smoking floors and hypo-allergenic rooms available. No excuses: your morning workout is included in the price of the room. Note: prices are listed as regular/weekend rates.

405 rooms (standard class: singles 1600/1200EEK, doubles 1900/1600EEK; executive class: singles 1900/1500EEK, doubles 2200/1800EEK, double deluxe 2800/2300EEK; junior suites 2800/2300EEK, with sauna 3200/2600EEK, jewel jr suites 3200/2600EEK, jewel suites 3700/3000EEK, extra bed 300EEK, pets 200EEK).

Tallinn's only five-star hotel offers both luxury and exclusivity in three exquisitely restored Old Town storehouses. Each room is uniquely furnished with English antiques, prepared for you as if you were a guest at a English country house, not simply a client at a hotel. Parking 100EEK. Ask about weekend discount packages.

Park Consul St. Petersbourg
Rataskaevu 7, tel. 628 65 00, fax 628 65 65, hotell@petersbourg.ee

The team behind the Park Consul Schlössle has restored this Old Town hotel to its 1850s grandeur, bringing back its historical name as well. The only rival the St. Petersbourg has for excellence in Tallinn is its five-star sister hotel.

28 rooms (13 standard: singles 1800 - 2120EEK, doubles 2280 - 2600EEK, 8 deluxe: singles 2120EEK, doubles 2600EEK, 5 jr suites 3200EEK, 2 one-bedroom suites 3800 - 4900EEK).

Scandic Hotel Palace ****
Vabaduse väljak 3, tel. 640 73 00, fax 640 72 99, www.finest.ee, palace@scandic-hotels.ee.

The Palace is accustomed to dealing with the most discerning of guests, from the Rolling Stones to the King and Queen of Norway. The hotel, however, has not forgotten mere mortals who may have to work for a living and will appreciate the details that will make that all the easier: from improved lighting to additional electrical sockets to double telephone outlets for modems.

83 rooms (39 singles 2200EEK, 35 doubles 2800EEK, 4doubles lux 3200EEK, 5 suites 3900EEK, suite with sauna 4600EEK, presidential suite 5500EEK, extra bed 300EEK.

Central ***
Narva 7c, tel. 633 98 00, fax 633 99 01, hotell@central.uninet.ee

A scaled-back version of the luxurious Olümpia, the Reval Hotel Group's three-star hotel still maintains their hallmark professionalism. Choose between the larger and slightly better appointed (minibars, larger TVs) on the yellow side of the hotel, and the economical rooms on the blue side. The service centre includes a beauty salon, travel agency, newsstand and flower shop.

224 rooms (singles 990 - 1300EEK, 214 doubles 1200 - 1600EEK, 15 suites 1600 - 2200EEK, extra bed 300 EEK, pets 300EEK).

Express Hotel
Sadama 1, tel. 667 87 00, fax 667 88 00, hotel@expresshotel.ee.

Efficiency is the name of the game. The Olümpia, Central and Park Hotels' newest sibling is proud of its no-nonsense, egalitarian atmosphere (even the desk clerks wear polo shirts). Rooms are nearly identical and there's only one price, whether you want a single, double or twin. Despite its claim to no-frills fame, the hotel offers some extras, including modem jacks in every room and a (free!) computer terminal in the lobby for guests' use.

166 rooms (166 doubles 850EEK, extra bed 300EEK).

Mihkli
Endla 23, tel. 45 37 04/45 38 19, fax 45 17 67, mihkli@anet.ee
The Mihkli has taken pains to update its image, completing a whole new fifth floor this spring, a new restaurant, and a health centre. Rooms, though stark, have a few new comforts with refrigerators in some and baths in others. The biggest advantages are the free morning sauna and proximity to Old Town.

61 rooms (20 singles 800EEK, 38 doubles 1150EEK, small suites 1350EEK, suite 2000EEK, extra bed 220EEK, pets 100EEK).

Park
Kreutzwaldi 23, tel. 630 53 33, fax 630 53 15, park@parkhotel.ee

Boasting the biggest casino in the Baltics and the biggest double rooms in Tallinn, the Park has a lot to be proud of, including professional service, a top-class restaurant, tasteful design and attention to the needs of all their guests. Ask about special rooms for non-smokers, those with allergies and those with disabilities.

120 rooms (24 singles 1300EEK, 91 doubles 1500EEK, 3 doubles with sauna 2200EEK, 2 suites 3200EEK, extra bed 300EEK, pets 100EEK).

Pirita
Regati 1, tel. 639 86 00, fax 639 88 21, pirita@firm.ee

The Pirita complex, built for the 1980 Olympic sailing regatta, is renowned today for its yacht harbour and top-class fitness centre and swimming pool. While the hotel's exterior and the unrenovated rooms are starting to show their age, the renovated rooms in business class are on a par with others in this price class. Swimming pool, morning sauna and parking are included in the price. Take bus N°1, 1A, 8, 34, 38 from the main post office to the Rummu stop.

145 rooms (standard class: singles 795EEK, doubles 1080EEK, suites 1485EEK; business class: singles 1090EEK, doubles 1290EEK, deluxe doubles/jr. suites 1950EEK, suites 2600EEK; extra bed 250EEK; pets 200EEK).

Rotermann
Mere 6a, tel. 613 79 00, fax 613 79 99, rothotel@infonet.ee

Conveniently located between the harbour and Old Town, this is the younger, slightly more expensive sister of the Rottermanni Viiking, next door.

38 rooms (7 singles 900EEK, 28 doubles 1150EEK, 3 suites 1500EEK,extra bed 300EEK).

Rotermanni Viiking
Mere 6a, tel. 660 19 34 fax 613 79 01, viiking@anet.ee

The location is the biggest selling point here, at the older of the Rottermann hotels, which still has a brand-new feel. Rooms are sizeable and the interior decorating will be to some people's taste.

36 rooms (70 beds, 4singles 650/850EEK, 33 doubles850/1150EEK, 2suites 1100/1250EEK, 1 triple 1000/1450EEK, extra bed 300EEK). Breakfast 50EEK.

No need to hit the town for entertainment: here you'll find a restaurant, café, three bars, a nightclub, three saunas and a shopping centre. Entrance to the hotel's nightclub, Café Amigo, is included in the price.

Mid-Range

Most of the mid-range choices are out of the centre.

Alexi
Sihi 49, tel./fax 650 62 21.

When you just can't face another impersonal hotel, try this peaceful retreat among the pines in the Nõmme district, 7km south of Tallinn. It's the next best thing to staying in a private home. Take bus N°14 or 18 to the Haava stop.

6 rooms (singles 500EEK, doubles 600EEK).

Ecoland **
Randvere 115, tel. 605 19 99, fax 605 19 98.

A good 8km out of the centre, beyond the Pirita district, Ecoland hopes to capitalise on its bucolic setting. The brand-new, modern hotel mixes in a few folksy touches but never sinks to kitsch. Cable TV, heated bathroom floors and a free morning sauna. Take bus N°8 to the last stop.

35 rooms (7 singles 660EEK, 24 doubles 770EEK, 4 doubles deluxe 990EEK, extra bed 200 EEK, pets 150EEK).

Hermes
Sütiste 21, tel. 626 81 11/521 611, fax 654 23 23, hermes@eol.ee.

A large, impersonal hotel in the Mustamäe residential area, offering full service - but so far no smile. Recent renovations have added a new bar. Morning sauna is free. Take bus N°17 or 17a to the Tervise stop.

Comfortable, surrounded by private houses and gardens. Public transport connections to the centre are few and far between. Take bus N°5 to the Helmiku stop.

10 rooms (singles 590EEK, doubles 690 - 790EEK, extra bed 200EEK).

Peedu
Võrse 22, tel. 655 26 38, fax 655 24 93, we@trenet.ee

Peoleo
Pärnu 555, tel. 650 39 65, fax 650 39 00, hotel@peoleo.ee

Peoleo has the feel of a suburban motel, here on the southwestern outskirts of Tallinn. First-floor doubles are sizeable, while second-floor singles are cosy nests under the eaves. You may find the stuffed trophies a little disturbing. Located 13km from the centre, the Peoleo Hotel is unreachable by public transport. Free parking available.

52 rooms (22singles 450/585EEK, 30doubles 600/ 780EEK, extra bed 212EEK, child's bed 125EEK, junior suite 1000EEK/1500EEK for one/two people).

The new suites all have private saunas and the fifth floor has been designated non-smoking. Hypo-allergenic rooms also available. Take tram N°2 or 4 to the end and walk 200m.

Tähetorni
Tähetorni 16, tel. 677 91 00/677 91 10, fax 672 67 46.

This four-year-old brick building still has a brand-new feel. Friendly, English-speaking service and vast, tastefully decorated rooms and baths win kudos. The location 9km from the centre could be a drawback - or a plus if you enjoy the quiet seclusion of pine forests. If you don't have your own transportation, take bus N°91 (the Maksimarket bus) from Kaubamaja to Mäepealse stop and walk 800m. Guarded parking available.

18 rooms (2 singles 500EEK, 28doubles 590 - 800EEK,suites 1200EEK, extra bed 120EEK). Breakfast 55EEK.

Kännu 26/2, tel. 655 11 96, tel./fax 654 23 02, www.white-villa.ee, willa@estpak.ee

The Vahtra family are the most eager hosts you'll find in Tallinn. Share their three-storey modern home with them in the quiet, middle-class Linnuküla area. The less expensive rooms share a bath in the hall, but this is family, remember? Valge Villa is also the first hotel to offer an Internet connection in all guest rooms. Ask about special family prices for week-long stays. Take bus N°17 or 17a to the Koolimaja stop, or trolleybus N°2, 3 or 4 to the Tedre stop and watch for signs.
