Matställen i Klaipeda |
|
One might make the assumption that
since Klaipeda is a tourist town, that service would be
outstanding and waiters and waitresses would be used to foreigners. Nothing could be further from the
truth. Even today
on the cusp of the 21st century, we find ourselves aghast at the
nonchalance of waiters and the inordinate amount of time we must
wait for a menu, our food or even the check. Also surprising to
some is the lack of high quality seafood available in
restaurants. Most fish is imported from Scandinavia and other
far-flung areas of the globe so more often than not you find
yourself in the awkward position of sitting on the coast of Lithuania, sea breezes wafting around you, seagulls clucking and
you are faced with a plate of fish that has probably travelled as
far you have to get to that particular dining table. There are
some local lake fish worth eating and one particular to the
Curonian lagoon.

| Rominta |
Manto 5,
tel. (370-6) 25 89 70. Open 08:00 -
24:00. |
One of the veteran eateries in Klaipeda, Rominta remains popular with locals and foreigners alike. With an original menu featuring pita sandwiches, an excellent breakfast menu and other international dishes, the so-called "Aquarium" is great for people-watching. A popular place to stop by for a drink before going out for the night as well as a good place for any meal.
|
| Dzonas Smitas |
Sportininku 46, tel. (370-6) 25 74 01. Open 12:00 - 24:00 |
More than just a pizza restaurant, this country western restaurant has that American Midwest feel with a little bit of Baltic imagination thrown in for good measure. The waiting staff are all dolled up in traditional Western garb. The restaurant itself is pure modern American Midwest - carpeted floors, a TV and couch. The menu has thin-crust, well-endowed pizzas, steaks with baked potatoes and chicken wings. Dishes cost about 20Lt. Service charge is 5%. Live country music for your listening pleasure Friday through Sunday, 20:00 - 23:00.
|
| Skandalas Kanto 44, tel. (370-6) 21 28 85. Open 12:00 - 03:00. |
Live blues, excellent flame-grilled steaks, huge portions of pasta, delicious oversized brownies, chunky Canadian potato skins and even some Tex-Mex treats in this self-styled North American restaurant. It's a favourite for its food and atmosphere. Dishes cost between 20 and 40Lt. Order before 18:00 and dishes are 30% cheaper and slightly smaller. Don't get excited about the Dr. Pepper - they don't always have it. Their dish of Canadian beer snacks - fried cheese, chicken fingers and potato skins - is fantastic.
|
|
| Prusija Simkaus 6, tel. (370-6) 21 85 91. Open 09:00 - 24:00. |
Next door to the hotel of the same name and under the same management, the Prusija may take its name from the area's Prussian history, but its own roots are in the distant Caucasus. The Armenian owner serves dolma and saslyk in addition to local specialities, seafood and spaghetti. Dishes cost 10 - 20Lt. Summer beer garden.
|
|
| Kinu Restoranas Sukileliu 8/10, tel. (370-6) 21 23 06. Open 12:00 - 24:00. Kitchen open until 22:00. |
First of all it's your only choice for Chinese food. Second, the food is passably good. Lastly, the decor has that appropriate red-lantern look to it. To show off its authentic recipes the Chinese Restaurant serves the rice in a bamboo basket and spices the meat well. Non-smoking room to the left. Note the 5% service charge.
|
|
| Taravos Anike Sukileliu 8, tel. (370-6) 21 73 08. Open 10:00 - 24:00. |
You wouldn't know it from the light wood and lace country home decor, but this little place serves a variety of dishes influenced by the Far East such as lamb saslyk and even some Vietnamese-esque eats. Of course, a few Lithuanian eats have sneaked their way on to the menu. Spicier and tastier than the usual.
| Emilija Turgaus 23, tel. (370-6) 25 79 37. Open 10:00 - 24:00. |
Pretentiously attentive service here at this elegant and cushy little bistro where you will find a European menu of delicate dishes for about 20Lt each.
|
|
| Forena Manto 4, tel. (370-6) 31 09 85. Open 08:00 - 01:00, Sun 10:00 - 01:00. |
An upscale cafe with a lovely, international menu featuring Italian, Chinese and Spanish influences. We like this place for their light meals of sandwiches, soups and omlettes as well as the breakfast menu (08:00 - 11:00). Meals cost 10 - 20Lt. Piano and saxophone from 20:00.
|
|
| Luja Manto 20, tel. (370-6) 25 94 45. Open 12:00 - 24:00. |
Someone likes Luja, but who likes it and why is still a mystery to us. The stiff formality coupled with the heavy dishes influenced by German and Polish cuisine is a turn-off. Of course, if you like ceremonious attention and northern food then Luja with its dramatic crystal chandelier and regal furniture is the place for you.
|
|
| Metu Laikai Donelaicio 6a, tel. (370-6) 21 67 10. Open 11:00 - 24:00. |
Nestled in the Mazvydas Sculpture Park, the Four Seasons restaurant is a cosy get-away. The interior keeps with the restaurant's park setting with cushioned park benches for seats. |
|
| Naktovidis Malunininku 3, tel. (370-6) 39 32 60. Open 12:00 - 24:00. |
This sophisticated restaurant in the Jura hotel has overstuffed chairs on which to relax your whole body while you dig into slightly better than mediocre European dishes.
| Bambola Neries 10, tel. (370-6) 21 58 94. Taikos 115, tel. (370-6) 36 14 23. Open 11:00 - 22:00, Fri, Sat 11:00 - 23:00. Manto 1, tel. (370-6) 31 22 13. Open 10:00 - 24:00, Fri, Sat 10:00 - 01:00. |
With 40 kinds of thin-crust pizzas on hand, they're sure to have what you want and some that you don't want (like pizza with banana and bearnaise sauce). They've also introduced a handful of Tex-Mex snacks from tacos to 'wraps' (like a burrito but without the rice and beans). Take-away and delivery.
|
|
| San Marco Zveju 21/Teatro 1, tel. (370-6) 21 66 65. Open 11:00 - 22:00, Sat, Sun 11:00 - 23:00. |

|
|
||
| Akmenine gele Sukileliu 18, tel. (370-6) 21 55 78. Open 11:00 - 24:00. |
Akmenine gele is aptly named it seems. The food - cepelinai to kepsnys - and the atmosphere are as heavy as a 'stone flower'. The only attraction to this gothic-style restaurant is the fachwerk building in which it is located. Beware that we've found it closed without explanation during the summer.
|
|
| Buru uzeiga Kepeju 17, tel. (370-6) 21 49 70. Cafe open 08:00 - 24:00, restaurant open 11:00 - 18:00, bar open 12:00 - 24:00. Closed Sun. |
A favourite among those who haunt Old Town, this small restaurant with dark wood and open-timbered ceiling has a lovely country peasant feel. The menu is a medley of Lithuanian specialities mostly centring on potatoes and meat - so bring an appetite. Service can be cold, but the friendly ways of the regulars can be warm.
| Juodojo Katino Smukle Mazvydo 1/Manto 9, tel. (370-6) 21 98 80/21 01 55. Open 10:00 - 24:00. |
The Black Cat Pub has a lively atmosphere of regular customers and an excellent, cheap menu of Lithuanian eats. To drink there is Guinness, Kalnapilis and svyturys beer. Really good service tops it all off. One of our favourites.
|
|
| Kurpiai Kurpiu 1, tel. (370-6) 21 90 10. Open 12:00 - 03:00. |
The premiere jazz club in Klaipeda offers wonderful, breezy outdoor seating in summer as well as a sophisticated upstairs dining room all year round. In an old brick house, Kurpiai is a great place for live music as well as bite to eat and a drink. Rotary Club meets here.

|
Cafe culture has yet to really catch on in this small Baltic nation and Klaipeda is no exception. Though there are a few select cafes worth hanging out in most are just good for a quick, cheap lunch or short rest and a drink. |
||
|
The following are fairly straightforward places with lots to eat, but lacking that certain cosy atmosphere so good for long hours of sipping coffee or another beverage. |
||
| Flamingo Manto 38, tel. (370-6) 31 06 50. Open 10:00 - 23:00. |
Stuffed flamingos peer out from the corner. People flock to the tables by the big windows for people-watching. Others park it at the horseshoe-shaped bar to drink a cocktail. Very well lit and slightly styling. Cocktails go for 7 - 15Lt while dishes go for 10 - 20Lt. Lots of seafood on the short menu.
|
|
| Godunas Janonio 11, tel. (370-6) 31 09 06. Open 09:00 - 23:00, Thr - Sun 12:00 - 24:00. |
The Godunas is the bar/restaurant of the Sveèiø Namai Hotel. Order and pay in advance at the bar or make a visit to their cafeteria at the other end of the cafe. Enjoy or be scared by the pink, black, and chrome decor in the spirit of the 1980s. The music, unfortunately, is strictly 1990s techno. Dishes cost from 7 - 10Lt.
| Jola Mazvydo 9, tel. (370-6) 21 89 73. Open 09:00 - 24:00, Sat, Sun 11:00 - 24:00. |
The friendly barman sets this cafe apart from the rest. In a well-lit but not well-ventilated cellar enjoy Lithuanian dishes for less than 12Lt, fruity, creative desserts and milkshakes. The coin-topped counter should be enough of a draw for those of you interested in surveying the money of the world. Popular with teenagers out for a long talk and lots of giggling.
| Omaras Simkaus 12, tel. (370-6) 31 15 64. Open 10:00 - 24:00, Sat, Sun 12:00 - 24:00. |
A long, skinny room holds this nautical-theme cafe. Plenty of fish - in the aquarium and on the menu. Grilled or fried fish will set you back about 20Lt. Those who go for turf over surf will find chicken dishes.
|
|
| Senamiestis Baznyziu 4, tel. (370-6) 25 18 44. Open 11:00 - 24:00. |
Couch seating at low tables with white tablecloths and mirrors on the ceiling. This little cafe, attached to Galerija Baroti, has a swell atmosphere and excellent outdoor seating, but their microwaved fare leaves a lot to be desired. Bring your kids to their Childrens Afternoon on Sunday at 13:00 for two hours of fun, games and songs. The Lithuanian dishes here cost less than 10Lt.

Fotogalerija
Tomo 7, tel. (370-6) 21 70 10. Open 11:00 -
24:00, Sun 12:00 - 24:00.
Fotogalerija just has that quintessential jazzy, groovy,
hep cat feel. So slip into your best black turtleneck and duck
into this small, dark, smoky café for a glass of wine, good
music and some small snacks. The couches are at your disposal for
hours of lounging, drinking and deep talking. If you have nothing
to discuss, pop up to the photo gallery upstairs (open 11:00 -
18:00, closed Sun, Mon).
Galerija Peda
Turgaus 10, tel. (370-6) 21 38 58. Open 10:00
- 24:00.
A sophisticated cafe with a jazzy atmosphere for jazzy
people. Sit in red velvet chairs tucked into private nooks to
listen to live piano music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from
20:00 to 22:00. Excellent long cocktail menu as well as
satisfying menu. The gallery is really a series of glass display
cases filled with jewellery and art for sale.
Rasyte
Tiltu 6, tel. (370-6) 21 71 67/21 35 15. Bar
open 09:00 - 21:00, cafe and wine cellar open 12:00 - 24:00.
Skip the bar and go directly to the sweet sophistication
of the wine cellar to enjoy some grape elixir. The upstairs cafe
is also a nice place to cool your jets with a drink and a seat on
a low couch. Live music starts upstairs at 21:00. The bar is
nothing worth bothering with and tends to attract those
interested in drinking. Look for the entrance on Kepeju.
A trip to Lithuania is not complete without a snack of thick, black coffee and a sugary sweet cake. It'll really put a kick in your step.
Daniski Gardesiai
Mazvydo 7, tel. (+370-6) 25 54 35. Open
09:00 - 22:00.
Doughnuts, fresh-baked bread, dreamy pastries, big
mugs of hot, black coffee, Nutella

to the super supermarket - IKI.
Du Gaideliai
Mazvydo 8. Open 12:00 - 19:00, Tue 12:00 -
18:00. Closed Mon.
A sweet little retro kiddy café with tables and
chairs low to the ground to accommodate little people. Great
place for some juice with the babies after a walk in Mazvydos
park.
Kava/Ledai
Zveju 9. Open 10:00 - 23:00.
Why do they dress their waitresses up in those
ridiculous little red satin vests, white blouses and black
skirts? If it's supposed to make us feel happy, it doesn't. We
feel rather sorry for these grown women dressed like little
maids. Obviously one can get coffee and ice cream here. One can
also gorge oneself on a myriad of sugary confections. Low on
atmosphere, high on sugar content. A little dingy.
San Marko
Zveju 21/Teatro 1, tel. (+370-6) 21 66 65.
Open 11:00 - 24:00.
A picture menu will help you decide what kind of
gelato (from lemon to tiramisu) concoction you might fancy. Or be
pragmatic and opt for a single scoop to satisfy your sweet tooth.
We praise them for serving real cappuccino. Buon apetito! No
smoking allowed until 19:00.
Although most hotels serve

Right around the corner from Theatre Square, this bright
and airy restaurant has good Italian eats. The delicious

gelato and a cappuccino. Smoking and non-smoking sections.
We're a little ashamed to admit it, but we think that Klaipeda has some of the best fast food and pizza delivery in Lithuania.

smokers to the right. Find it a few steps down the alley. Their
menu is a collection of kepsnys and grilled chicken with
most dishes costing about 11Lt. Snacks can be had for less than
5Lt.
Subway
????????
The ultimate in fast food submarine sandwiches. Any
American will tell you that this little sandwich shop has done a
good job of insuating itself into the culinary fabric of their
nation. Wether you think their sandwiches are delicious or just a
little too suspiciously good looking is up to you. One thing is
for shure - it's much easier to pick one up to take to the beach
than it is to make your own.
