| Queenborough | Trot boat service seems, at present, to be unreliable. No service last saturday night or apparently the weekend before. If you want to make sure you can get ashore for a meal you'd better take your dinghy and outboard. Does anybody local have any more information – I would have thought that in an unemployment blackspot like the Isle of Sheppey there must be someone who could provide a reliable service. | ||

Situated near the entrance of the Thames river, 60 miles east of London this historic 17th century harbour, with seaside resort town containing Victorian architecture has a history that includes fishing, smuggling, numerous shipwrecks and trading. The guest harbor was well laid out with excellent facilities and a fascinating maritime museum featuring several of the boats that rescued thousands of allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunquerque. New part of marina on WEST side of harbour is now complete and open. Good depth, (older outer harbour pontoon area has several shoals, at LW.), excellent new shower and ammenities block within 100 metres. |
|
| Dover | the Granville Dock has had pontoons installed but the opening hours are much longer than those of the Wellington Dock. The Dover leaflet I collected says that it is open for around 60% of the tidal cycle and that was my experience on a recent visit. The staff at Dover were very helpful and with the extended marina it is an even better stop. | ||
| Eastbourne |
Sovereign
Harbour, Hbk: 6th I've just heard from a CA member about a recent
grounding in the middle of the entrance to Sovereign Harbour 2 hrs.
before low water. The yacht (draft 6 ft.) then dragged over to the
northern side under a Southerly wind. Apparently the lifeboat attemted
help but wrote off two propellors. Apparently £20000 worth of damage
was caused. |
||
| Wootton Creek | Lat: 50n44.06 Long: 01w12.68 | Some Almanacs indicate 2m depth at Fishbourne Quay. It has also been known for fin Keel yachts to stay at the quay overnight as the water around the pontoons have been dredged. With this information in hand, I arrived at Fishbourne quay to find a completely different picture - The depth on the outer pontoon is now -0.9(dries) at CD. Fishbourne Quay is no longer in business but the yard does belong to Aluminium Shipbuilding Ltd, hence no yachting facilities. Overnight not suitable for Fin Keel yachts. The tranits which lead you up the narrow channel from where the ferries berth in Wootton (270 degrees), are in a poor state of repair. The rear triangle is slightly overgrown and the front triangle has fallen over. Mark Hawkins, Yacht: Merlin, 11/08/01 | |

| Heybridge Basin | Essex |
Lock 'Traffic Lights'; Two reds= Not today sunshine. One red= opening this tide. Green= Get a move on, we don't have all day! Basin Gutway, "dogleg" in gutway even
more acute, from the green 'Basin Approaches' buoy head towards the end
wall of the Jolly Sailor Pub until abeam of the second withy then alter
towards the lock gates and head straight in. Leave withies to Port about
ten feet. Top of springs, just head straight in. Depth gauge reads +2 ft,
but if you draught is under seven feet you will have no problems. Twelve
foot draught is do-able with care. |
|
| Lowestoft | Suffolk |
Yacht basin looking good with new entrance (from the channel to the bridge) open with traffic lights for exit and former entrance piled off. Two long pontoons with finger berths and bridge up to Royal Norfolk and Suffolk YC. Crew can now go ashore without "walking the sausage"! Water now much quieter. New shower block nearing completion. Security gates with password make this a very secure marina. RNSYC is up and running but very expensive at £19 (38ft)plus £1 for 10KW plus £1 for water. Good food at the Club. The Lowestoft cruising club has a few moorings for visiters if you go through the bridge, it now boasts a small clubhouse. |
|
| Orford | Office has telephone (01394 459950) |
Moorings available for visitors to Orford will again have a small orange pick-up buoy marked V attached; charge payable to new Harbour Office £5 per night. Office has telephone (01394 459950) and listens on VHF Ch 8/18 during day. Call "Chantry" on Ch 8. Orford Sailing Club (OSC) pontoon with reasonable depth (gauge at end) except at LW and maximum stay (attended) one hour; water hose. Key for OSC showers and WCs available from Hr Office, deposit £5. Adjacent National Trust office organizes ferry to Ness, with excellent exhibitions and restored wartime relics. |

| Ipswich | Associated British Ports
(ABP)
has installed new lock gates in the Wet Dock at Ipswich port, and has
begun work on a 180-berth marina in the dock. |
||
| Brighton | Met Bob Goodall, father of MD . New facilities include health centre with swimming pool, 28 lane bowling alley, many new restaurants including floating Chinese, shuttle bus (£1 adults, children free) to Palace Pier, much new building. Resident boat owners moaning that their car park being built on. Entrance channel harrowed on ebb so mud flushed out, buy major dredging planned July. Now thay everyone including vandals in Brighton have a key they plan swipe cards. Own web site planned shortly. | ||

| Whitehaven Harbour |
The whole of the inner harbour, north and south harbour are now enclosed
by a sea lock manned 24hrs pr day. Acccess over dredged outer harbour
gives 4hr+-HW Springs and almost 24 hr neaps. Call Whitehaven lock on
Ch12 for entry and depth in channel. Pontoons have been laid in the
inner harbour 110 berths with visitors spaces, a further 50 berths are
being laid NOW. We have been promised full toilets and shower block to
replace portaloos in the next three months. Fuel (red) is available on
the pontoon ask lockmaster to make arrangements. Whitehaven has a long maritime history, the only port in the UK to have been invaded by the Americans (John Paul Jones founder of the american navy) led a traiterous attack on the port where he had trained as an apprentice shipbuilder. This was followed by involvement in the slave and rum trade. In latter years it was a centre for coal and iron production, this has now gone. With its close proximity to the Lake District vast amounts of regeneration works are making the town a tourist venue. This has created a first class centre for sailing around the Irish sea. |

| Berwick
-on-Tweed |
£3.50 per night in Tweed Dock. Tap on quay. Supermarket (07(Sun 08)-20), PO and chippie near dock. Significantly less water than our visit five years ago. Apparently the river Tweed has not been in spate this winter, which normally clears the sand, but winter strorms have moved it in. Deepest water now inshore of temporary red spherical buoys and not on line with ldg. marks. A freighter from Rostock still comes regularly (fertiliser in, crushed red stone out), also cement carriers, but strictly at HW. Third largest colony of swans in country, 450 resident but others fly in to moult and have to grow new feathers before they can fly out, so last census counted 650. Coble-fishing for salmon off reef in river at LW.

(Royal Northumberland YC) |
A warm welcome to this brand new marina with 70 m of visitors berth can be guaranteed. Three pontoons with fingers give 120 berths for members and another pontoon is planned. Electricity (£1 for 9KWhr) and hoses on visitores pontoon. Showers in H/Y Tyne which has now been moved alongside central pier. Access card (£10 deposit) needed to get back in and for access to H/Y for showers (luxuriously refurbished). Payphone.
| Hartlepool | huge marina with excellent facilities. Entry easily identified as mole to port is concrete blocks and to starboard dark stone. Overnight £1,50/m. Diesel (pump immediately to s'bd after lock), 21p/litre. Visitors moor alongside penultimate East pontoon, electricity (£1/9KWhr), water. Super showers. Restaurants, YC, shops (Church St), and Asda nearby. Access key. Lock opens on demand HW±5 (not ±4.5 as per Macmillan). | ||
| Whitby | - £1.19/m per night but harbour dues make up half and the pontoon is much more comfortable with water, electricity and showers (£3 deposit for key). Shepherd Purse restaurant discreetly hidden behind delightful delicatessen does excellent fish and vegetarian dishes with fascinating decor (high ceiling hidden by suspended canoes, skis, etc.!). For real celebration try Bagdale Hall, or good food in real Yorkshire pub Duke of York. Whitby is always worth a second night! | ||
| Wells-
next-the-Sea |
Mr Graham Walker gives great welcome and directs you to an
alongside berth (some positions dry, ladder loaned) if called on VHF.
Swift tide but quite
manageable at springs. Water hose. Diesel. Have to use public WCs.
Inexpensive slipping service. Fish and chip shops opposite! Chartlet of harbour approach |

Tide Mill Marina is most attractive, popular with Dutch and Germans, accessible HW±1 or so. Good showers, electricity, hoses. Diesel. Near town centre with attractive shops and supermarket. First night charge £8.50 for 6m, plus £0.50 for each 0.5m over 6m. Babaji, 12/8/98 Dick Larkman's yard near the navigable limit of
the Deben near Wilford Bridge specializes in laying up, offers
very good value, and has two cranes to get up to six in or out on a tide;
easy walking distance from Woodbridge Station. Power points. Cradle
rental. Ray Glaister, 15/2/01 Newhaven - Sea Containers PLC has carried out initial essential repair work on its recently acquired marina at Newhaven, and a full dredge, which is nearing completion, will allow for an increase in berths and further improvements. 3/4/00 Newhaven - Visitors pontoon in Newhaven Marina dried at lw - access and space less than anticipated from pilots but Marina restaurant recommended for enthusiastic if eccentric service!! John Langham Brown, 27/7/98 Solent - We have recieved some up-to-date information from our HLR in Lymington, Capt.Hutchinson, about the mooring and berthing situations, and about small changes to the approach. These will be published in HANNS, but if you intend to go there and are unfamiliar with the river, we advise you to contact Capt.Hutchinson. (details in Yearbook) Bosham - As lovely as ever but with worst floating greed weed ever known. Check strainers before leaving. Babaji, 25/5/98 Swanage - More moorings and seemingly more kelp on bottom adding to difficulty in anchoring. Restoration of pier, with delightful shelter and elegant cast iron balustrades nearly complete, Babaji, 26/5/98 Brixham - MDL maintaining in excellent order. Neil Salter, their new manager is most enthusiastic, Babaji, 27/5/98 Cattewater (Plymouth) - New marina under construction already providing healthy competition. Pontoons in place for 200 boats, but no power or water yet, and temporary showers. New amenities block up to floor level. 65 ton boat lift. Babaji, 29/5/98 River Yealm is equipped with detached visitors pontoons. Falmouth and Fowey have similar arrangements. Although these pontoons make convenient stopping places and allow more yachts to be packed in than swinging moorings, we found that leaving the pontoon can be harder than arriving. The tide in these rivers runs very strongly at times, and in some cases is at an angle to the lie of the pontoon, which can pose problems. On one occasion we had to delay departure from the upstream pontoon in the R Yealm until the tide turned as we could not figure out a way to leave safely with 3kn of tide on the stern and an unattended yacht close ahead. David Sadler, 29/9/98 Salcombe - Harbour
launches VHF seems unreliable or at least fussy. On my two VHF sets I
could not understand their transmissions but they could understand mine
and I could understand other transmissions. A second boat clearly had
the same problems R.L.Saunders 7/6/99 River Fal - There are at least three pontoon moorings in the upper reaches of the Fal beyond the King Harry Ferry. They are equipped with rubbish collection but nothing else and cost £6 / night. They were well sheltered in the recent awful weather. R.L.Saunders, 1/6/99 Dart Harbour - the fuel barge does NOT supply water (it would cost an enormous amount to connect) and will not accept oily waste (e.g. paper towelling contaminated with diesel) Furthermore while one used to be able to get water at the fishermans pontoon it is no longer available. Water can be obtained at the quay in several places. Provide your own hose. R.L.Saunders, 1/6/99 St Mawes - Excellent shelter and still room to anchor but fair distance for tenders. Babaji, 30/5/98 Mylor Creek (Falmouth) - now hundreds of private moorings and anchoring would be difficult. Helford - private pontoon for dinghies good value at £1 for Shipwrights Inn serving excellent food and draught beer. Hardly changed in years. No Vodafone signal at Inn or on moorings.
