Phi Phi Don

The coloured cliffs of North Phi Phi Don

The coloured cliffs have made North Phi Phi Don famous

Ko Phi-Phi is made up of two main islands, Phi-Phi Don and Phi-Phi Ley. Situated in the Andaman sea amongst breathtaking lime rock formations, Phi-Phi is equal distance from both Krabi and Phuket. The ferry from both costs around 200-300Baht and takes about two hours. The service is very frequent.
Phi-Phi's main attraction is it's beautiful white sand beaches and it's general relaxing atmosphere. With more and more visitors each year, plus having the Hollywood movie "The Beach" filmed here, prices are now increasing with demand. Despite this, Phi-Phi still makes an ideal getaway spot to escape the crowds in Phuket and Krabi.
Accommodation is primarily bungalows and beach huts. Average price for a beach hut with shower room is 250/350Baht per night and for a more comfortable bungalow with bathroom around 450-800Baht. Both also have toilets. There are only a handful of fully fledged hotels and although these are luxurious, can be very pricey.
Phi-Phi also has some excellent dive sites. Dive shops in both Phuket and Krabi offer trips but Krabi is the cheaper of the two.

Anchorages

North Phi Phi Don

Northwest Bay

Although it is not the most picturesque bay on Phi, this spot is a handy anchorage in the northeast monsoon season for those arriving late from Krabi. Anchor in 10 metres on the sandy bottom well offshore; take care not to enter too far into the bay, as it is closed by shallow coral.

Phi Phi Palm Beach

In the southwest monsoon season good anchorage is available in 8-10 metres offshore from the Phi Phi Palm Beach Resort. In the northeast season anchor on the sheltered west coast.

Phi Phi Palm Beach Resort, an environmentally friendly, award-winning hotel of international standard, has all the usual amenities. With attractive, comfortable bungalows this is one of Phi Phi's quality resorts, and only one of two with swimming pools. The attractive beach is fringed with coral reefs, and about 200 metres of tidal flats dry out at spring low tides. Longtail boats are always available for the trip to Ton Sai village, There is one local restaurant on the beach, beside a poor, scrappy sea gypsy village.

Phi Phi Village

Look for good holding in 15 metres on a sandy bottom offshore from the Phi Phi Village Resort.

This is an attractive bungalow-style hotel with all the amenities. This is particularly quiet, being the only development on this beach.

The anchorage has similar characteristics to that off Phi Phi Palm Beach, although it is necessary to anchor further offshore. At low tide the bay dries out leaving a couple of hundred metres of exposed sand.

Again, longtails are available at high tide for the 30 minute trip around to Ton Sai bay and the village there.
