"Ao" means beach in Thai. Ao Nang, just 20 km outside of Krabi Town is easily accessible from all over Thailand.
Au Nang is not as crowded as Phucket or Koh Samui, but the town is well developed with dozens of hotels, bungalows, and restaurants. You'd be hard pressed to throw a stone in town without hitting an Internet cafe. While this isn't exactly getting away from it all, the spectacular natural beauty and perfect swimming beaches combined with the convenience of setting up day excursions into more remote areas by longtail taxis, makes this an excellent place to set up camp, albeit one with air conditioning and hot water.
One of the best things about Ao Nang is seafood. An expensive meal runs about US$15 a person and features the largest prawn you have ever eaten (well over 1lbs. each). It is great fun picking dinner every night from the iced displays set out in front of all of the open air restaurants. Soon you will be able to identify and eat barracuda, white and red snapper, sea bass, moon fish (excellent when served Chinese style), parrot fish (not recommended eating), small whole tuna, and of course varieties of prawn, lobster and several types of crab.

| Eating
The main delight has to be the seafood. Local fishermen catch it from the water and take it straight to your favourite restaurant. Squid, crab, fresh fish and shell fish are on every menu and the only deciding factor in choosing the best place to eat seems to be how good looking the waiters/waitresses are. As that is a personal thing I wouldn't dare to comment on such matters!!!!!
