Tjockö |
Tjockö is still an "unspoiled" island in its original setting. This setting once inspired Jenny Nyström and particularly her son Curt Stopendal. They lived here during a period and painted hundreds of paintings with the famous father Christmas motive.
Tjockö is situated just east of Rådmansö and can be reached by passenger boat from Räfsnäs jetty, just north of Kapellskär.
Tjockö has some 50 permanent residents. The Tjockö archipelago has more than 350 islands. During the dark ages the island was inhabited by fishermen and seal hunters. From time to time they also took up piracy in order to improve family earnings. In the 19th century shipping was the main occupation, but the big sailing ships lost to competition from steamers after the first World War. The population then took up piloting and running the light house with part time farming on Tjockö. Some took up the very profitable liqueur traffic from Baltic States. Today the main attractions are the beautiful old archipelago buildings. The population is now fully domesticated and cater to the tourist business.
The island has several marked trails that takes you through the nature. The road from the jetty to the eastern shore is 5 km. Swimming is excellent on the north-western shore along the trail to the light-house. The handicraft shop offers products from the island, the tavern Gläntan offers meals, beer and wine. Guided tours and boat trips are arranged by Tjockö Service och Framtid.
At the southern end of the island Tjockö Skärgårdskryss arranges sailing camps for children. Navigation and sailing for adults are also arranged. Tel: 0176-430 79.The marina is beautifully situated at the northern end of the island. In the handicraft shop they also serve coffee and products from their bakery.
Tjockö Homestead arranges art exhibitions in the summer. Tjockö Service och Framtid offers workspace for those who want to get on to the net or who wants to work away from the office. Here you will have workspace, access to computers, faxes and copying machines.
