nature reserve

[Lådna]

Lådna provisions

Nature reserve in the central archipelago uniquely unexploited. Thanks to the farmers of the island who refused to sell in spite of tempting offers. The reserve is now in the good hands of Skärgårdsstiftelsen. Beaches are both steep and flat. With little sandy beaches in between.

On the main island, Lådna, there are 50 permanent residents and 70 summer houses. The island has living farming. On the island S Lådna there are fine trails and beaches aand you can pitch your tent. Fresh water well and garbage container

Hemviken is known to yachtsmen as a safe anchorage. On midsummer eve there is traditional family fun with dancing around the pole, games, lottery and cafeteria. It is really a family gathering, low keyed and popular.

Nature shows that it has been subjected to active farming and forestry. The surrounding islands have been kept open like on the old days by sheep grazing in the summer. But most of the farmland has returned to nature.

Since Skärgårdsstiftelsen promotes active farming, archipelago farming has again been revived, Västergården on  Hjälmö. Also Oppgården on Lådna has been saved for the future. On both farms there are now cows and sheep, and they are shipped out to the surrounding islands in the reservation with a 'cow ferry'.

On the south side of the island Stora Hästnacken there are traces of a brickyard. The brickyard was opened in 1730 and was in operation for over 100 years. The old fort of Fredriksborgs was built with bricks from Stora Hästnacken.
