Karklö |
Karklö village can be found around the harbour on the E side. The harbour gives good protection to boats and village. Over time the harbour cove has become shallow and the public dock has been relocated to the W side of the island..
In the old harbour thera are several well preserved boathouses and on the slopes towards the harbour there are several houses with much 19th century charm intact.
The dwellings are surrounded by apple trees, lilac bushes and maple trees
The first recorded buildings on Karklö go back to the 1530s, when a farmer is recorded in the taxation papers. In 1645 Mårten Blixencron was given Karklö as a donation by the state. From 1678 there is a record that Karklö now was owned the Rålamb family. During the next 100 years ownership changed between several families; Gripenhjelm, Mörner and Natt och Dag.
In 1798 Karklö was sold to three farmers and the island remained in farmer hands for the next 150 years, after which the land was divided into smaller parcels. In 1930 the land was split between 10 owners and ten years later this number had increased to 20 owners.
In 1719 the island was hit by the russians andbuildings properties and hay harvest was burnt. Verbal tradition has it that one building was saved from burning. The building remains today but it is not sure that this is the building in the myth.
