In the 1870s and more so in the 1880s the traffic slowed down because of the depression and the growth of steam driven ships that were much easier to navigate with. Many of these new steamers could manage the Husarö fairway without a pilot.
The duties of the Husarö pilot were now taken over by the pilots at Furusund, Sandhamn and Dalarö. In 1912 the station was officially closed. What remains of the pilot era is shown in Sundströmska lotsgården, a museum at Husarö shown to the public after appointment.
At the pilots lookout there used to be a 15 meter high lookout from 1895 to 1912. In daytime a pilot was on duty in the tower every 30 minutes. At the old lookout there is a compass carved in the rock. It says 1601.

The last Saturday in July there is a festival at Husarö with cross country contest, a fair and display of the pilot´s museum. You can visit the museum at other times as well if you make an appointment by tel. 542 450 19.

You can trek, swim, angle, rent boats, canoes or windsurfing boards.Husarö received official status as a pilot station in 1740. Long before piloting became an official concern towards the end of the 17th century some archipelago families had piloting as a way to bring more money to the household. From old letters we know that the King´s ships used to be piloted through the archipelago by selected men. During the era of the large sailing ships the pilots at Husarö used to pilot to the north to Furusund and south to Berghamn pilot station at Stavsnäs. The piloting was quite extensive. At the beginning of the 19th century the Husarö station had 10 pilots. |
Next to the steamer jetty you will find Husarö Skärgårdscenter with a marina, cafeteria, groceries, petrol, rental of boats and surf boards.
