Herräng

In northern Roslagen, 110 km N Stockholm is Herräng, an old industrial community dating back to the 16th century.

Dthe most important iron ore mining in the Stockholm area, once took place in the community of Norrtälje, and particularly on the Herrängsfältet in Häverö socken. The Enäs mine was the biggest in the community and produced 850 tons of iron ore between the years 1833 - 1939.

Towards the end of the 16th century, iron ore was also mined at Kuggvass, where once Hanseatic ships, koggs, loaded the ore for transportation to other Hanseatic towns.

After a period of closed mines, in 1822 the mines were again opened and mining commenced once again.

Locating a mill and forgery close to Herräng mines was based on the fact that access to a good harbour was essential to acceptable transportation to the market.

The 1920s and the 30s brought depression to the mining of iron. Herräng cut down and eventually closed again in 1939. In the 1950s Herräng was opened again  and in 1969 closed again. The forgery is still in operation.

The Eknäs mine is now a museum. A two-storey manor house, a wooden storehouse on poles, and a few other buildings remain.

Herräng is now a small village with some 400 families. In the winter it quiet and calm little place, but in the summer there is a lot of activity. Owners of summerhouses show up and Herräng Dance Camp makes the little village quite cosmopolitan.
