Grinda |
The island of Grinda, the green island, is two hours from Stockholm by boat. The island is popular among Stockholmers for swimming, sports activities and relaxing excursions. You can walk along paths and lanes - it is only a 15-minute walk across the island. There is a small hotel and restaurant, a shop open during summer as well as a simple camping site. Rowboats can be rented. Grinda is ideally positioned for day excursions with Waxholmsbåtarna or Cinderella. Most steamers call at Grinda and islands like Möja or Vaxholm are easily accessible.

History
People have lived here since the dark ages. In the 16th century there was one taxpaying farmer on the island.
Early in the 18th century Grinda was purchased by city people and thus lost for the archipelago farmers. For the rest of the century the ownership changed many times. Early in the 19th century it came in the hands of archipelago farmers again as three of them purchased the island.
1905 Grinda was again purchased now by judge Henrik Santesson. Two years later he built the yellow jugend brickhouse designed by architect Ernst Stenhammar. The building still remains as does many of the supporting houses that were built in 1908. The tenant farmer´s house from 1892 also remains.
1944 Grinda was purchased by the city of Stockholm for the purpose of providing space and recreation for the people.
Grinda is one of the first properties that the city of Stockholm purchased for the sole purpose to provide its citizens with land for recreation. The small cottages for rent were built in the 1940´s and much of the character from that time remains. They show the concept of providing recreation in the archipelago for the general public after the second world war.
The jugend building is one of the largest stone buildings in the archipelago and contrasts to the small rental cottages. It clearly shows how wealthy people in the beginning of the 20th century, just like in earlier centuries purchased archipelago property and never worked it for a living.
Farming at Grinda came to an end in the 1960´s but harvesting and grazing keeps the landscape open.
In the 1970´s several new rental cottages have been built.
