Fjärdlång

Fjärdlång has been owned by both the king Gustav Vasa, the pirate Carl Petter Blom and the Wallenberg's. Nowadays it's public property with house- and boat-renting and camping. The youth hostel is situated in an old villa built by the banker and art collector Ernest Thiel.

In the 15th century there was a homestead on the island. Those days fishing, seabirds and seals were the main food sources. On the island the homesteaders raised rye, kept the cows and sheep grazing in the forests and collected hay from the small meadow patches for winter feeding.

During Gustav Vasa´s first period as king, Fjärdlång (Fjällång) belonged to the state. In 1533 it was sold and after another 450 years of private ownership, it is now again a state property as a nature reserve.

The 20th century brought a new era to the islands. Property that until then had been owned by homesteaders were now purchased by people primarily interested in the land for its natural beauty and for recreation, not for living off the land.

So, 1909 Fjärdlång and its archipelago was purchased by financier Ernest Thiel and the "Thielska villan" was built. (It is now an impressing youth hostel).

Fjärdlång is a rocky island with a lookout with a splendid view some 36 meter above sealevel. Vegetation is dominated by groves of pine and fir but in low areas you will find broad-leaf trees. Islets and skerries with shallow waters in between offer important sanctuaries for rare sea birds.

Fjärdlång hosts some of the best anchorages in the archipelago as well as a marina.

Kiosk and boat rental at the steamer jetty in the southwest, where you will find the marina. Nearest grocery store is at Vargvik on Ornö. There you will also find petrol and fresh water.
