The Royal Swedish Yacht Club and the Marina on Sand Island

Sandhamn is perhaps the best-known excursion destination in the archipelago, the island is the main centre for sailing. The Royal Swedish Yacht Club was established here 100 years ago. The island itself is called "Sandön" (Sand Island), and Sandhamn is the name of the village with its harbour. The island has about 100 permanent residents. Near the harbour you will find a couple of hotels, restaurants, shops and other services. The village with its narrow alleys and closely-packed houses is well worth exploring.

The recently-built hotel is combined with Seglarrestaurangen (The Sailors' Restaurant). You can also enjoy the pool and a relaxing sauna. Sandhamn's bathing rocks and beaches are highly recommended.

Price per double-room per day: 990 SEK incl. buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner with coffee, incl. VAT. For booking and information contact Seglarrestaurangen & Hotell, summer telephone number: +46-8 571 530 20.

From Sandhamn on Sandön the large sailing contest starts: Gotland runt.
The picturesque village is the home of the Royal Sailing Club (KSSS). The club house is a custom-house from 1752, protected by law. There are many thing to see at Sandhamn if you're interested in woodcraft or engineering.
Visit the bakery , post office, the tennis court or play miniature golf.
There are some really nice paths if you like hiking and fantastic sand beaches.

This might seem like a quiet little town but when day turns to night it is probably the best party town in the archipelago. There are two restaurants, or night clubs if you wish.

Outside the village there is an old cemetery with gravestones on which you can read the names of seafarers from many different parts of the world. There was originally a customs station here, and Sandhamns Värdshus has been serving sailors since 1672. With its fine sandy beaches, the island is an ideal place if you want a swim. You can also try scuba diving. Inquire at the Excursion Shop in Sweden House which can book an introductory course. The boat journey from Stockholm takes about three hours on one of the vintage steamers, but faster boat travel is also available. Sandhamn can also be reached by bus to Stavsnäs followed by a short 30-minute boat trip.
