Saltsjöbaden - the famous seaside resort |
Saltsjöbaden is the most famous part of Nacka. Knut Wallenberg, an important financier and banker, formed the Stockholm-Saltsjön company to build and run a railway between Stockholm and Saltsjöbaden. The company also aimed at marking and selling plots of land. All this helped the Saltsjöbaden community to grow and develop. The Saltsjö railway (Saltsjöbanan) was inaugurated in 1893, and several communities, such as Saltsjö-Duvnäs, Storängen and Lillängen, grew up along its length. The railway also created the right conditions for the area´s first major industries. Saltsjöbaden has a number of famous buildings, some of which are described below:
The Grand Hotel was designed by Erik Josephson and opened in the summer of 1893. With its towers and ornamental gables, the building is similar in style to Gripsholm castle. It has played host to a number of important meetings and conferences over the years: in 1938, the Saltsjöbaden Agreement was signed here between the SAF (the Swedish employers´ confederation) and the LO (the Swedish trade unions´ confederation). This turned Saltsjöbaden and the "Saltsjöbaden spirit" into household words in Sweden. The Grand Hotel itself achieved international fame in 1977, when it hosted an OPEC conference.
Uppenbarelsekyrkan (the Church of the Revelation). Saltsjöbadens church was created in 1913 by the famous Swedish architect Ferdinand Boberg. Archbishop Nathan Söderblom gave the church its name and drew up its ideological principles, while the sculptor Carl Milles created many of the church´s important objects, including its impressive bronze main doors. The figurative paintings inside the church are the work of Professor Olle Hjortzberg.
Skärtofta Gård is one of the most fashionable houses in Saltsjöbaden. It was designed by the architect Gustaf Lindgren in 1897. At Stockholmsutställningen (the Stockholm Exhibition), it was judged to be the best example of Swedish architecture of the 1890s. The mansion is owned by the Swedish Cooperative and Wholesale Society (Kooperativa Förbundet) and is now used as a conference venue.
