[Runmarö]

Runmarö is 6 km long and 4 km wide SE of Värmdö. 200 permanent residents and 3000 summer house people. There are more than 30 cars registered on the island.

Runmarö is a living island with grocery store, school, post office and tavern, and is easily accessed by visitors without their own boat. From Stavsnäs is frequent transportation and it takes only 10 minutes. You can visit the old bosun homestead from the 17th century, rent a bike or rent a canoe.

In the 13th century Runmarö's name was Rudni, the island of the oarsmen. From the Middle ages until the end of the 19th century limestone was quarried at Runmarö and you can still find remnants of old furnaces. The limestone was used as mortar and here the limestone was burnt for use in building the old castle Tre Kronor.

On a rock just S of Styrsvik public dock there is still a pilot's lookout and reminds you of the time when Runmarö was 'the island of the pilots'. The lookout is easily visible when you approach the island but it is now on private land. In documents from 1814 you will find that 45 pilots lived on the island and only 14 farmers. Total population that year was 264.

In 1719 the Russians devastated the island. Hardly any farm was left unharmed. 'Flight from the Russians' is the name given to a hill S of Gatan where yuo still can find ovens where the Russians baked their bread. Hera you will also the remnants of the homestead Vintergatan, where the people gathered before the rossing of the ice covered waters to Djurö and Vintertullen at Hammarby sjö where the herring was sold.

Many artists and authors have come to Runmarö over the years. Strindberg spent a couple of years here at the of the 1880s. Tomas Tranströmmer found new inspiration on the island as did Lars Forsell.
