Rånö - Ålö 58'56,3 N - 18'10,7 E

One of the very special characteristics of Rånö are the wide sandy beaches like Storsand. It is a beautiful horseshoe shaped bay. There are unusually high dunes next to the beach.

Rånö and the neighboring island Ålö were both mentioned in itineraries from the 13th century. On both islands there are rocks where beacons were lit when the enemy approached. They were the early warning system for the archipelago and must have required lookouts around the clock. This indicates that these island were inhabited in the 13th century. 

In the 17th century most of the homesteads were owned by Erik Flemming, who also built the mansion on Rånö in the 1670s.

The Russians hit these island badly in 1719 since they wre right in the middle of the fighting. Later during the 18th century the islands were bought by cavalry captain Reutersköld and towards the beginning of the 19th century the Utö Mining Company took over. The city of Stockholm purchased Rånö in1949 and Ålö in 1964. From 1998 the islands have been turned over to Skärgårdsstiftelsen.
