Nåttarö
58'52,9 N - 18'6,8 O

The most popular anchorage is at the northern tip of the island, Östermarsfladen. Here and at three other landings you will find garbage containers.

Just like Ålö and Rånö, Nåttarö is described in the "pilot book" from the 13th century, the Valdemar itinerary, and like many other islands Nåttarö also had special high spots for beacons. 1785 the island was sold to the Reutersköld family. 1949 the first land purchase by the city of Stockholm took place.

From 1998 the island has been transferred to the Archipelago Foundation.

Nature

Nåttarö can be compared to a giant sandy playground. Sand plains on Nåttarö are among the largest in Stockholm archipelago. The island is low and the forests consist of pines. On the beaches you will find many unusual and rare flowers like thrift and sea rocket. Behind the dunes at Storsand is the northernmost habitat in Sweden for the strange saltwort.

The bay of Nåttarö with its many small skerries has great significance for the birdlife, particularly sea birds. Ducks, geese and swans, mingle with seagulls and other birds, like rare species of duck.

In the south is Blåbärsmossen, surrounded by swampy forests. It is conical and projects an untouched impression. In the swampy forest north of the bog, with some luck you will see the smaller fly-catcher. In the forest you will also find other rare flowers. Nåttarö also has a population of deer.

North of Nåttarö is Ängsholmen. Here is a well developed flora with rare species like butterfly orchids and "root-of-tooth". Birdlife is rich with scarlet rosefinks and mockingbirds.

Sights

Between the village and Stora Sand is Drottninggrottan. The cave has its name from queen Maria Eleonora (1599-1655), who is rumored to have been in the the cave seeking protection.

Just to the north of Stora Sand and some 75 meter from the beach there is a very well preserved fields of rubble-stones. Yet some ways north you can find examples of giant´s kettles.

At Bötsudden, all the way to the north, you will not only have an excellent view but you will find a cairn where in earlier times beacons were lit to alert people on neighboring islands.
