Ljusterö

Ljusterö is about 3,5 Swedish miles long with Linanäs, the main village of the island, in the south. To the north of Ljusterö is Östra Lagnö, a national park.
The church at Mellansjö is from the 17th century. There is also a museum and a golf course.

History

Ljusterö has been populated for over 2000 years, some of the island´s 8 burial grounds date back to that period. The population lived off the land and fishing. City people came to the island at the end of the 19th century.

A life far away from the agglomerations, fishing in the evening, thinking in front of the open fire, se the sunset in the open sea,that was the dream for a city dweller. Artists like Albert Engström, Verner von Heidenstam and Bruno Liljefors loved to go to Ljusterö. Albert Engström wrote about Ljusterö in many of his recollections in his autobiography.

Ljusterö is one of the larger islands in the archipelago and can be reached by ferry from Östanå on the mainland. Västra and Östra Lagnö is a peninsula on northern Ljusterö. Östra Lagnö is a nature reserve and a popular target for excursions in the archipelago with lovely rocks polished by the sea and a magnificent view of the outer islands.

Sights

Ljusterö offers you the opportunity to play golf, tennis, angling, and have fine bike rides. You can also visit artists and handicraft shops. The homestead museum is open daily in the summer. You can take a swim in the Baltic or rent water-skis, surfboards, bicycles or boats.
