Finnhamn
59°28,9 N-18°50,0 E

Finnhamn (Eng. Finn Harbour) consists of Stora Jolpan, Lilla Jolpan and Idholmen, three islands right on the open sea. Finnhamn has the largest youth hostel in the archipelago. You can rent rowing boats and the trip from Strömkajen in Stockholm takes about 3 hours.

Where the northern archipelago opens up toward the outer islands, and where the nature becomes more spectacular, you will find Finnhamn and Husarö. Finnhamn consists of the islands Stora Jolpan, Lilla Jolpan and Idholmen, three islands bordering to the open sea. Here you will find splendid nature with beach meadows, clusters of trees and a rich flora. Husarö is just to the north of Finnhamn.

Finnhamn offers opportunities for you to hike freely on the three islands. Trails are plentiful and will take you through a nature full of groves, open meadows, and sheltered coves with sandy beaches and polished rocks. High on the lookout point next to the hostel, you will find what remains of Rönnström´s old pleasure yacht, the chimney, saving as a landmark for sailors and reminding of old times with punch, warm and sunny summers and vacation.

The natural harbour on the south side of Söder-Långholm, next to the fairway and opposite Finnhamn. There is a small shop, cafeteria, showers, and toilets a couple of hundred meters away. There are swells from the fairway and therefore not a very comfortable place to spend the night.

History

Husarö has housed pilots since the 15th century. A hundred years later a captain from Husarö was relieved from his tax obligations, for piloting the kings ship. The old fairway ran from Möja västerfjärd, past Husarö and Hallonstenarna to Blidösundet. On the island Tippen east of Särsö there once was a pilot`s lookout. 1740 Husarö recieved priviliges as an official pilot station and the fairway was moved somewhat to the west through Finnnhamn. During the era of the sailing ships the pilots at Husarö piloted north to Furusund and south to Sandhamn. At the beginning of the 19th century Husarö har 15 pilots, but during the following century the numbers were gradually reduced until the station was finnally closed in 1912. Summar people have been at Husarö since the steamers started scheduled traffic in 1881.

Finnhamn was originally only the name of the anchorage at Stora Jolpan. It is easy to understand the origin of that name. Big Finnish ships on their way to Stockholm along the Husarö fairway passed the channel and anchored up for the night at Finnhamn (Finn harbour).

Finnhamn was purchased by the city of Stockholm in 1943. The last farm on the island was closed in the 1940´s.

Anchorage is available at the south end of Söder-Långholm opposite Finnhamn. There is a grocery shop a couple of hundred meters away, cafeteria, showers, toilets. The island is great for hiking. Since there are swells from the nearby fairway, this anchorage is not all that good for overnight stops.
