Fejan

Not much is known about the older history of Fejan. But the contemporary history is both exciting and interesting. It all started at the end of the 19th century. Cholera then swept through Europe and Swedish authorities decided to stop its spreading at the borders. The eastcoast quarantine was located to Fejan, an island in the northern part of Stockholm archipelago. In a great hurry during the summer of 1892 a hospital, Wasa, was built together with some supporting buildings. One of them was the doctor´s house, originally constructed to become a missionary in the Congo.

Towards the end of World War II these buildings were given a new mission. When the Soviet occupied Estonia in September 1944, more than 30000 Estonians fled across the Baltic in small boats. Fejan had now still another hospital building, von Döbeln, and was chosen as the camp for refugees from the Baltic states.

The Archipelago Foundation took over the property in 1994. The foundation has established an archipelago center at Fejan and thus put the old buildings to use again. Today there is a modern archipelago center in operation, with a hostel with 55 beds, a marina, over 30 boats for rent, a restaurant, Knipan, with room for 200 people, grocery store with all provisions, sauna, conference facilities and handicraft shop.
