Dalarö
58°08,15' N-18°24,3' E

Sweden's first pilot-station and in the 19th century a fashionable resort for the rich and famous.
Everything on the island was burned to the ground by the Russians in 1719. But for some reason they spared the church from 1652. Everything you might need you can get at Dalarö. The hotel is in an old fortress. There are regular boat tours from Stockholm and you can get by bus or car as well.

History

Dalarö has a fascinating history. All through the centuries Dalarö has been an important harbour and fishing port. The archipelago flavor still remains in Dalarö and the setting is old and genuine.

The Baltic Sea Customs was located to Dalarö in 1636 and that was the start of a more active life for Dalarö. The beautiful church was built in 1652 and in 1656 the fortress Dalarö Skans was ready for action. The fortress had been built in order to provide protection for Stockholm against naval attacks from the south. In the 19th century Dalarö continued to develop into a popular resort and the well preserved "societetshuset" served the function of meeting place and pension for wealthy vacationers like August Strindberg and Anders Zorn.

Dalarö, the first pilot station in Sweden, thus evolved into a fashionable summer resort and many of the old buildings are well preserved and give a strong feeling of the idyllic life 100 years ago. The church was spared by the Russians when they burned Dalarö in 1719. The impressive Customs House is a museum today.

Dalarö today offers many things to the visitor. Excellent walks take you through the old village along narrow lanes with beautiful old wooden houses. Fully developed services. Hotels, restaurants shopping and tourist offices.

From Dalarö there are scheduled boat services to neighboring islands like Kymmendö, Ornö, Utö and Fjärdlång. SL-buses and Waxholm steamers take you there from Stockholm.
