Plentzia |
This municipality in the province of Biscay, is situated in the Plentzia-Mungia region, and its boundaries coincide with the banks of the River Plentzia (or Butrón), that run from its mouth. It is 11.17 km˛ in area.
Land relief is provided by a seriesof hills that gradually climb in height until petering out in the hills of Zabala-Ondo (altitude 213 metres) and Kukutxa (altitude 109 metres). Structurally, the area belongs to an area known as the "Biscayan Syncline", predominantly made up of Eocene matter. The river network with the River Plentzia (or Butrón) as its backbone has formed a series of meanders upon one of which stands the town of Plentzia.
Areas forming the municipality are geographically quite disperse, and are as follows: Saratxagas, Isuskiza and the Town Centre itself.
The town centre comprises three nuclei that are quite different to each other: the historic, Old Town or the town's original nucleus, Txipios and the New District in which recently constructed buildings, result of the expanding tourist development, are preferably built, thus making tourism one of the current economic pillars of the municipality.
A steep slope leads from the church square to the beautiful and very popular Main Square where the Town Hall is found. On the opposite side of the square, we shall see the Casino building that once enjoyed great prestige and fame when it was a flourishing concern.
