L'Estartit

Medes island marine reserve

L'Estartit (pronounce it with the stress over the last syllable and you'll be doing just fine) is a small sea resort belonging to the township known as Torroella de Montgri (pronounce it as Toorooay a the Moongree). It is located at the heart of the Costa Brava, where the rough Montgri mountains meet the Ter river plain. This location gives L'Estartit both fifteen kilometres of rocky cliffs coastline, which make for great diving spots, together with a long stretch of sandy shallow beach, which makes for the best family swimming.

And there's more. Not even a mile off L'Estartit (a 5 minute boat trip), the Medes emerge from the Mediterranean. The so called Medes Islands is in fact a set of islets which harbour an extraordinary reserve of nature and sea life, due to the presence of a great variety of species and environments. Around the islets, one of the most important nature reserves in the Mediterranean has been created for preservation.
