The beautiful Arosa Island is surrounded by the mussel beds where the best mussels in the world grow
The Isle of Arosa is small, 7 square kilometers, linked to the main land by a 1800 m long bridge. The isle’s 4600 inhabitants, named by roman geographer Plinius as Annios Insulae, live basically of the fishing and of the mussel. Bishop Sisnando and King Ordonno II gave the Isle to San Martinno Pinario’s monastery in Santiago in the X century for taking advantage of the saltworks, and later on king Afonso IV built in a monastery dedicated to San Xian. As historical remains on the Isle we conserve the Celtic village of Campo dos Bufos and the seamill of As Acenas.
There are many virgin beaches in the Isle of Arosa, and it is worth to make an excursion to the natural area of O Carreiron. Scuba diving and fishing are other popular activities.
