Ampuriabrava |
The name has a fine historic ring to it, but in fact the entire village was entirely built for holidaymakers, mostly Germans, with many of its villas set on a 35-kilometer network of canals so that wealthy villa owners can dock their yachts just below their back porches.. What the town lacks in character is somewhat made up for in it's good selection of sports facilities. With watersports on the beach, plenty of tennis courts, and amusement parks for the kids, there's something for everyone. There's also a good center for boat rentals here, with all kinds of vessels available per day or season
The labyrinthian canals of this marina/residential complex offer a total of 2,750 mostly small berths and should not be confused with the entrance to Sta. Margarida only 1.5M NE. Visiting yachts will find space in the "port interior", a yacht basin offering 600 berths to 22m and a yacht club with gymnasium, squash courts, jacuzzis, pool, etc. There is also a boat yard here. Access to the yacht basin is via a long canal with an average depth of 3m. Located at the mouth of the Muga River, Ampuriabrava's maze of waterways are hedged in by massive residential/tourist development. The town centre is not within walking distance, however. The beaches near the port are crowded in season, and there are many restaurants and bars in the vicinity. A casino is 10km away. Tourist attractions: Costa Brava parachute jumping centre. Aiguamolls de L'Empordą. Fishing Club.
