Ustka (Stolpmuende) 54°36' N - 16°51' E |
Ustka is a fishing and commercial port, beach resort as well as a saline health spa situated along the widened and expanded port of Słupia River, about 18 km from the town of Słupsk. The population of Ustka is about 17,200. Fishermen lived here as early as the 12th century and from the 13th century it was a harbour of the Slav tribes of Pomerania where numerous cargo - laden ships called.
The first written
record about Ustka dated 1310. The origin of port is dated in the 14th
century during the reign of West Pomeranian Princes. Until the 17th
century the port has been developed considerably. According to the
documents in 1655 local fleet consisted of 11 vessels.
For approx. 100 years Ustka has been renovated as the seaside resort
with medical mud, sulphur and other mineral baths. At present, the town
centre has preserved many examples of the 19th century domestic
architecture, including elegant brick villas. Pensions and hotels are
open to tourists throughout the year.
Amongst the interesting buildings there are neo-Gothic church, from
1885, with old decorations, old townhall and houses of frame
construction from the 18h and 19th century. The lighthouse was built in
1871. Since the beginning of the 20th rapid growth of Ustka has started.
The port has mostly serviced sailing vessels cabotaged Baltic trade.
Ustka is an important sea fishing centre. There is a safe and easily
approach from the open sea with adequate depth. The harbour area starts
from the river estuary (to the south), which is 1 km long and ends at a
railway bridge. There are grain elevators in the commercial harbour. In
the fishing harbour there is extended range of fishery facilities. A
shipyard serving fishing vessels and repair work shops for small ships
exist in the harbour. Good weather conditions keeps the harbour open for
vessels with the max. draught of 4.5m. Because of small water areas the
port can accept only those vessels whose length do not exceed 58 m and
the width is lower than 11m.
A big wave is created during severe storms coming from the N. The depths
in the harbour are not constant, because of the intensive movements of
rubble caused by sediment transport. It is very hard to navigate since
all water areas have to be constantly dredged.
The port consists of 4 following main basins:
Coal Basin, inside the entrance on the west side of the harbour,
is 110m long , 55m wide with a depth of 5.5m. The basin is equipped for
handling coal and slate. There is a derric for small boats with a 15t
lifting capacity.
Repair Basin on the west side, 2 cables south of Coal Basin, is a
narrow basin 110m long lying at right angle to the river. It provides
workshops and support facilities for fishing vessels.
Winter Basin on the east bank lies parallel to the river and is
entered opposite Repair Basin. There are depths of 5.5m within the basin,
which is used by fishing vessels. At the south quay is a boatyard with a
slip for small vessels up to 24m in length.
Sedimentary Basin, with depths from 6 to 6.5m, is the wide river
section in the south part of the harbour close north of the railway
bridge. On its east side there is a slip for small vessels up to 15m in
lenght.
