The beach at Hel

Hel

The dunes at Hel

N of Bay of Gdansk, a long peninsula stretches out from the W. At the S side of the point, you find Hel, a fishing harbour, and a resort, reached by ferry from Gdansk in S.
In the small village you find a lot of small shops and simple restaurants.
Nearby, W of the fishing harbour, is a naval base. Avoid the base!

The Polish navy have some proud traditions here. Hel was Polish even between the wars. As a part of "the Polish corridor" it was one of Poland's few contacts with the sea. From Hel embarked what Poland had of Navy, when the war broke out. They fought a proud, but hopeless fight against more modern vessels and enemy air dominance. Hel has now a small navy museum.

Outside the point in W and S, the water is shallow. On the point stands a lighthouse. From the S side you se a light buoy (a south buoy) marking the edge of the shallow banks. From SW you have no problem approaching the harbour.

Village with fishing harbour at the Leba river estuary. Leba is situated near Slowinski national park, an area with mighty sand dunes, Poland's answer to Sahara!

The port can be hard to approach, due to the narrow inlet, which also lets the swells come into the inner harbour. Here a strong current also collides with the sea. This make the sand from the sea come into the harbour.

To improve the situation, the enlargement of the western pier began, and already under -99, it is expected to be lengthened to 130 m. Due to the narrow inlet, you can approach the harbour in winds up to 11 m/s, using both sails and a strong engine at the same time.

Steer 164° from Leba buoy (54°47,2'N 17° ;32,8'E, 1 M outside the inlet) until you see the leading lines. The syncchronised lights show orange blinking light every 10 sec, range 6 nm. The inlet grove have a depth of 12 m, but it shrinks to just 2 m ouside the inlet. The current is often i NE direction, can can reach a speed of 2-3 lnots. Pass 2-3 metres outside the eastern pier, until you come to the harbour office (Kapitanat) for clearance.

The space in the the harbour is very limited, and it is recommended to call the harbour office at VHF ch 16 or 12 to ask about outgoing traffic. In summer many tourist crafts with passengers goes to and from the harbour.

The Marina is located 500 meters off the breakwaters and consists of the yacht basin, which has concrete wharves. Depths from 2.5 to 3.5 meters.
The basin is separated from the entrance of the main port by a dike 160 meters in length. This guarantees good shelter for the visiting yachts. The Marina has capacity for 120 sailing and motor boats.
Existing facilities include showers, laundry, a cafe/restaurant, a 24 bed hostel and parking for cars and boat tracks. Modern hotel is planned for the future.

There is a yacht harbour.

The mouth of Rega River is protected by two breakwaters leaving an entrance 30 m wide. The eastern breakwater, which is the longer, extends 300 m from the shore. Difficult conditions for navigation on the entry from NE make the harbour useless for barge service and as a shield for other vessels. The fairway (2.5 m deep) is often silted up.

The river is suitable for coastal fishing vessels and there are landing places on each breakwater. Depths in the harbour entrance and near the langing places are variable and the harbour is not fully used because of the moving sediments and sand dumps which gather at the beds of the breakwaters. Marina Porta Mare on the south shore of Dabie Lake, a few miles east of the city, has repair facilities at the yacht clubs nearby. This is where yachts lower their masts before continuing south on the Odra River to the German inland waterways. Interster Marina at Goclaw is located north of the city.

South of Zalew Szczecinski, the fairway becomes narrow as you approach river Odra (Germ. Oder). Here you will find the city of Szczecin, one of the most important ports of Poland. Not worth visiting, unless you want to se the delta of Oder

But Szczecin is not a river town. Close by, you find the delta of river Oder, with lot's of river arms and islands. You also find the big lake Dabie. With all that water, and the low land, Szczecin is more like a sea town.

The fairway down to Szczecin has a heavy traffic with cargo ships, and the buoyage is of good quality. If you look up for the big ships, navigation is no problem.

You follow the fairway into Odra proper, and onwards to the south. In the area, you find a lot of yacht harbours to choose from. If you want to stay in the vicinity of the town you can dock at Goclaw Marina, north of the town. From the harbour you can go to centre with a tram.

In the river arms SE of the city and in the southern part of lake Dabie, you find a lot of yacht clubs. Some of them have quite good service. These harbours are also connected with the city by public transport.

Szczecin is an important culture and trade city, but much of the old city centre was destroyed during world war II.

It's history dates back to early medieval times. Later on, Szczecin became an important Hansa town. During most of it's history Szczecins has been German, ut during the period 1648-1720 it was the capital of Swedish Pomerania. After world war II, Szczecin is Polish.

Ustka

Of all Polish harbours, Swinoujscie and Ustka are the easiest to approach. Ustka is situated in the center of the Polish coast, at the estuary of river Slupia. To Swinoujscie it is 100 M, to Gdynia 90 M and to Bornholm, Denmark only 65 M.
The 41 m wide inlet leads to the outer harbour. Clearance is done at the newly renovated Captains house - a building with red saddle roof. The harbour master can be contacted at VHF ch 12.

The port can be difficult to approach in harsh weather with W, N or E winds. In such weater, overfalls are formed. Approaching in winds up to 11 m/s is secure, and in stronger winds you have to use both sail and engine to pass the inlet. In strong winds approaching can be dangerous!

As in most Polish harbours, there are sometimes currents parallel to the shore with a speed up to 3 knots.

The yacht harbour

The yacht harbour is run by Scouts. Basic facilities (WC and shower) exist, but the harbour is situated on the "wrong" side of the river. This makes the distance to Ustka long.

Town centre is located at the Eastern side of the inlet. Fine sand beaches, a nice beach walk with restaurants and cafe, and in evening music and dance, makes Ustka a nice stop. The number of visiting yachts are still limited, but in summer a lot of domestic tourists visit the resort.

The railway swing bridge, which has an opening 12.5 m in width, is closed before the departure of a train, and opened after it has passed. Vessels passing the bridge must use the opening on the right of the direction of travel.
The fishing harbour after reconstruction extends to the west bank of the Dziwna River, south of the bridge. The harbour has good fishing infrastructure, facilities and 133 m of dock space is available for fishing boats and barges. The dock 58 in lenght offer space for yachts visiting the port.
