Larvik is located in the county of Vestfold. With a total area of 530 sq km and 40,000 inhabitants, Larvik is the largest municipality in Vestfold. Larvik has an attractive coastline totaling 123km.
History
The ice age formed the Vestfold "Ra" which meets the sea at Mølen, on the outer Brunlanes coast. Mølen is also known for it's impressive burial mounds from the later Iron Age. Kaupang, Norway's only known trading area from the Viking age, is in the Larvik area.
From more modern times there are several cultural memorials such as Herregården, built in 1677 by Larvik's founder, Count Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve, Fritzøe Verk, where industrialisation and international trading began, and Fredriksvern Verft, begun in 1750 as headquarters for the Norwegian Navy and today base for the Air Force academy.
Business Life
Today's business and industrial life is varied and solidly based in local traditions and resources. The main areas are forestry, agriculture, wood industries, quarrying (Larvikitt), and many small and medium sized businesses.
Larvik Regional Harbour is to be the future container port in Oslo Fjord. The harbour is active and effective with uncomplicated access and good capacity.
Travel
Travel and tourism is also a substantial industry and is one that Larvik relies on. With it's 4,500 cottages, 26 campsites, ferry connections to Denmark and not least of all, the qualities that are to be found in the area, Larvik is well established in the elite division.
Culture
Larvik is a culture community! In the first national choice of the "Culture Community of the Year" in 1992, Larvik was the winner. The criteria were creativity, cooperative spirit and new thinking. In the adjudication 21 reasons were listed for choosing Larvik .
Here lie the reasons why Larvik has nurtured famous personalities such as Colin Archer, Thor Heyerdahl, Arne Nordheim, Carl Nesjar, Gunnar Reiss-Andersen, Bertrand Narvesen, Ingvar Ambjørnsen, Bjørg Eva Jensen, Terje Ythall and Richard Hermann to name a few.
Connection Point
Larvik is a crossroads for communication. NSB/Vestfold railway runs through Larvik with direct connection to Larvik harbor and the ferry to Frederikshavn and Hirtshals in Denmark. The E18 runs close by the town with good connecting roads and there is an international airport at Torp just 25 minutes away.
