Horten Canal

The 800 m canal separates Horten town and the old naval base Karl Johans Vern. Depth 1,75 m and overhead 2,0 m.

History
The canal was built 150 years ago by the navy as a shortcut to Oslofjord. When the navy stopped using rowboats the canal has been used by pleasure crafts. The traffic has been heavy in the summers.
The canal was closed in 1998 for renovation. It was dredged from 0,5 m to 1,75 m and a concrete bottom was installed. The sides have a new rock lining.
