Halden |
Halden has roughly 27 000 inhabitants, is situated in the south-easterly corner of Østfold, and covers an area of 640 km2.
At the foot of the castle rock an idyllic little town spreads out in beautiful surroundings by the lovely Iddefjord. Halden`s many architectural pearls are conspicuous, and where several occur toghether they form a beautiful empire-style districts.
Halden has an developed educational facilities and has become Østfold`s centre for further education, research and development. The fourth largest research area in the country is to be found here. Halden has a varied commercial life with the timber industry as the most important branch.
Halden became a vulnerable position on the border with Sweden, and strong fortifications were installed as protection from the 'enemy'. The town was attacked six times by the Swedes without the fort ever being taken.Read more about Halden in Norwegian
