Haldenvassdraget has served as transportation for timber from the large forests down to processing at Tistedalsfossen. Work on the canal was started in 1852 and the locks at Brekke, Krappeto, Strømsfoss and Ørje were built. The canal was ready for use in 1878.The distance between the Halden canal and the Swedish canal, Dalslands kanal, is only 2 km. Many times plans have been made for connection of the two canals, but nothing have come of these plans. Today there are real plans again, but no money. Perhabs EU will help!
