It is called Finnøy, the district of islands in the middle of the Bokna Fjord. The 1100 households living here consist of totally 2800 persons. In the summer the population is more than doubled. There are about 800 registered summer huts and homes in the district, and it is a very popular destination for people with small boats. The district has got 16 islands or groups of islands where people live all the year around. In addition there are quite a few tiny islands called "holmer" populated only during the summer. However, the greater part of them are completely whitout buildings of any kind
Hesby Church at Finnøy is one of the oldest churches in Rogaland. It was built in the 12.th century. On Talgje, too, the southern most island in Finnøy, there is a beautiful medieval church from 1140.
People have lived on the Finnøy islands for thousands of years. On Bjergøy, part of the Sjernarøyane group, a site has been excavated that ranks among the oldest ones found in Norway. The experts say the discovery is 7000 years old. Even older is the remains of the polarbear found at Judaberg in 1976. This 10600-year-old bear lived at the very end of the last ice-age.
Several persons playing an important part throughout history, come from these islands. Among them Ogmund Finnsson, the owner of the estate of Hesby. He actually administrated the Kingdom of Norway during two periods, 1366-1371 and 1380-1386.
The famous mathematician Niels Henrik Abel, son of a vicar, spent the first part of his childhood on the island of Finnøy. A monument to his honour was erected close to the vicar's farm.
