Bodø

67°17' N - 14°23' E

Bodø, latitude 67°17'N, is the administrative centre of Nordland county. With its 40,000 residents it is the second largest town in Northern Norway, with excellent communications and fully modern facilities. The town is surrounded by beautiful nature, including the Børvasstindene mountains to the south, and Landegode island and the Lofoten Islands to the north.
Bodø’s archipelago has a multitude of small island communities and a rich bird life. No other town in the world has a greater population of sea eagles. If you are lucky you may see the eagle glide across the sky, and this sight will entitle you to membership of the world’s only sea eagle club!
Each year, more than 1.5 million people travel to and from Bodø by air, railway, bus, express boat or coastal steamer.

Saltstraumen

The world’s strongest tidal current is found here, 33 km south of the centre of Bodø. The tidal current, which occurs every six hours, is caused by 400 million cubic metres of water flowing through the 3 km long and 150 m wide strait between Saltenfjorden and Skjerstadfjorden at a speed of up to 20 knots. The timetable for the Saltstraumen tide is available from the tourist information office.

Saltstraumen is a paradise for ocean fishing. The specialty is coley, and the world’s biggest coley hauled in by rod (22.7 kg) was caught in Saltstraumen. There are also great opportunities for mountain hiking, walks along heritage trails to sites of ancient settlements dating back 10,000 years, visits to museum or art galleries, or simply relaxing in beautiful natural surroundings close to hiking trails, picnic and barbecue areas.
