Ålesund |
The town of Ålesund is situated on top what is called the region of Fjord Norway - a major tourist region in Norway: Ålesund - being a part of the fjords, the serene beauty of the coastal landscape and the snow-peaked mountains of West-Norway - offers tourists something else: a different architecture, a bustling, colourful and village-like atmosphere.
Ålesund is internationally renowned for its Art Nouveau architecture. After a town fire in 1904 Ålesund was rebuilt in the distinctive architectural style with turrets, spires and imaginative ornamentation. A wander through the town center also reveals a lively urban scene with pleasant restaurants and cafés, and the picturesque Brosundet canal with its fishing boats.
The town has 40.000 inhabitants and represents the main adventure center in the region. The Atlantic Sea-Park, one of the largest aquariums in Northern Europe, is beautifully situated by the waterfront and provides a fascinating insight into the multitude of life beneath the waves. Take a stroll by the Sunnmøre Museum, an outdoor museum with more than 50 old houses in beautiful surroundings and an impressive boat collection. The beauty of the town can be appreciated from the town mountain Aksla, which affords a breathtaking view of the town and the entire region with its mountains, islands and fjords.
Ålesund is the fisheries capital of Norway; the Ålesund region also has strong traditions within ship technology and furniture industries.Marinas
