Binabeca |
![]()
Binibeca lies on the south east coast about five miles from Mahon and stretches from Cala Torret marking the eastern extreme (although this boundary is now being blurred as building starts in the area knows as S'Atalaya along the coast between Cala Torret and Biniancola), to Binibeca Vell, the famous fisherman's village, but in some holiday brochures this is stretched to include Binisafua and Binnidali.
On the edge of the village is the information office and management centre for quite a few of the villas and apartments in the area. From this office you can get advice and information, rent mopeds & push bikes, book taxis and even ask them to check the times on your return flights. [A small charge is made for phone calls] In front of this is a small harbour with jetty and hoist for launching small boats, and is home to Binibeca Diving, offering a full range of diving courses with equipment sales and hire. The area is also very good for swimming and snorkelling with the jetty and steps making access to the walter easy. there's also a bar / restaurant in the harbour open all day.
The beach, a good sheltered and calm Cala (inlet), with it's fine white sand is ideal for young children. The beach bar, Los Bucanero open from around 10:AM. serves drinks, snacks and light meals is very good. There's public lavatories, sun beds, sun brolly's and pedalo's for hire.
Walking further west along the coast you come to a roundabout, the road going inland takes you to Sant Llouis and Mahon, passing the Binicudi apartments on the brow of the hill overlooking Binibeca. Following the coast again 200 metres along is the Palomino apartments and Garden Village right on the edge of the sea. The Palomino block houses a small supermarket, gift shop, two restaurants, the Palomino Bar and the Smugglers with a car hire with money exchange shop.
A little further along is the Bini Inn a good restaurant [A little more expensive than others] with inside & outside dinning, a nice comfortable bar and swimming pool for customers use through the day. The Bini inn also has a tortoise garden with 4 or 5 wild [and rather aggressive] tortoise.
Another 500 metres and you arrive in Binibeca Vell. The highly architecturally acclaimed village is to your left with the commercial centre on your right. This has around six restaurants including one with a large pool for public use [as long as you buy drinks or food] and a music [night club type] bar, that is open till late plus a "pub" type bar that closes around 1:am. several shops selling the usual holiday gifts, leather good and clothes. A twenty four hour medical centre and quite a good supermarket. The village and harbour area is very picturesque and so gets a few coach buses doing the island tour stopping off here through the day.
All along the rocky coastline from Cala Torret right down to Binibeca Vell are sheltered coves usually with foot paths and steps leading down to swimming platforms. From these the snorkelling and swimming is very good and you don't often get more than two or three other people joining you. Please note although diving and jumping from the rocks can be great fun you should check first that there aren't any hidden dangers or rocks near the surface before you take the plunge.
Cala Binibeca has a pleasant yacht club

El Faro Spanish good value good food over looking the sea at Cala Torret. Bar Adrian in Biniancola just a short distance from Punta Prima at the South East corner of the island. On the 2 occasions that we have been to Bar Adrian, we have been made to feel as welcome as regular, nightly visitors (which we would be if we holidayed within easy distance of the restaurant). As I said, we were made to feel most welcome and were presented with a varied menu of fish, meat, Paella (book in advance), pasta.....oh it goes on.Our meals were served piping hot and in a most grand manner showing how proud the members of the family who run the restaurant are of their establishment. Smugglers The Swordfish was enormous, it would fit on two plates. A meal for 5 with starters, main course, dessert & drinks for around 15k pts is great value, the owners were very friendly Pedros [the restaurant attached to the bar owned by Peter from Preston].
For service and choice we enjoyed this best. The bar is open until 2am and is small but friendly, very popular when there is live football on the tele. The restuarant does an excellent set Sunday menu as well as having the best variety during the week. You get good portions for your money and Nini, the waitress is among the most friendly you could meet. Other companies
