Cottonera

These are three fortified harbour towns all of which were Malta's main maritime cities for 400 years. Known as The Three Cities they are Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua. Vittoriosa's role in defence goes back to 1274 but it was fortified in ancient times. Amongst the Auberges and chapels of Vitoriosa are the Inquisitor's Palace, Fort St Angelo, the Birgu Marina and Maritime Museum. Senglea was planned like Valletta, on a grid pattern by Grandmaster De La Sengle.

Its Parish Church is an important point of pilgrimage, other churches bear witness to Senglea's role in harbour defence and a small public garden offers panaromic views of Grand Harbour and beyond - plus a curiosly carved sentry box on the tip of the bastian. Cospicua 200 years younger than its neighbours, has a maze of streets and alleys some entirely of steps. There are a number of interesting churches and an open market every week.
