Comino |
This tiny island has no cars, a population of eight, a small store, chapel and a luxury hotel settled on one side.
There is swimming in the turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon and from sandy eaches or rocky caves. The Blue Lagoon is reserved for swimmers during the main summer months. In the cooler months the island is covered with wild flowers, small wildlife butterflies and birds making it a haven for naturalists.
Comino can be reached by the Comino Boat from Cirkewwa.
As a result of the isolation from the mainland and the mainstream of development, Comino is peaceful, remote and placid. On Comino, time is of no importance. A thousand years are as one.
Comino has been favoured by nature with a mild and pleasant climate and really enchanting sea, always beautiful in a wide range of blue and green shades. Situated between the larger islands of Malta and Gozo, it is one of the few remaining unspoiled islands in the Mediterranean Sea.
In the midst of an unsettled world, the peace and quiet reigning here is well nigh incredible. It is a Dreamhaven. One finds a solitude for reflection beyond all time and change. Here there are no tarmac roads, no milkmen, no labouring buses, cars and motor-scooters with their attendant smoke screens, no hurrying crowds, no cinemas, no rows of drab houses in drab streets, in fact none of the hallmarks of civilization.
There is no doubt that Comino was a center for smuggling and piracy in far off days. The small bays, inlets and caves must have sheltered the fast pirate sloops that slipped in and out to attack sailing ships and galleons.
Today Comino is a Bird Sanctuary and a Nature Reserve and is mostly a relaxation resort for Maltese and Tourists alike. All activities on Comino center around the Hotel.
Hop aboard the Hotel Comino's private launch and after a 25 minute ride you will not even recall the crush of the crowds elbowing to board Malta's Public ferries. The ruins of crusader towers stand watch as you cruise past craggy islets to the Comino Hotel.
