Balzan

Balzan, located in central Malta shares boundaries with other villages like Attard, Lija and B'Kara. It is situated 5 km away from the capital of Valletta and 4.5 km away from Mdina. Balzan is a community of about 1,300 families, which makes up a population of about 3,800.

Census reports dating back to 1575 show that there were a total of 60 dwellings in Balzan at the time, where approximately 500 people lived. These dwellings included townhouses of the wealthy as well as farms. Up to a few years ago old farmhouses such as those known as Ta' Sajrunies and tad- Dingejruti were still standing in Quarry Lane.

In the typical village of Balzan one finds several historical buildings where important people resided in past times.

One such building is the old residence of Vincenzo Bosio, commendator for the Order of the Knights St.John. This mansion is found in Three Churches Street. Pallazzo San Antonio in Providence Street, is another historical building which hosted many of the elite members of the Maltese society of the past. Casa Borg, found in Pope Pius Alexander Street was home for Mons. G. Maioli.
