Son Real

nature reserve

Son Real is located between Ca'n Picafort and Son Serra de Marina in the municipality of Santa Margarita.  Coming from Ca´n Picafort, the protected area begins where the developed area of Son Bauló ends and converges with the beach of the same name.
It has an extension of 1.114 hectars with a coastal fringe 6 km long and approximately 2 km wide, constituted by sandy dunes fixed by a developed vegetation.
The torrents "Son Bauló" and "Son Real" cross the preserved area, forming small, flooded areas of great beauty where they converge with the sandbanks.
In this area there are two fragile ecosystems: the dunes and that of humid areas, a very representative and well conserved example of the original Mallorcan coastline prior to the tourist development.
Vegetation: white marine iris, the marine thistle, sandbank reed, pines, "sabinas", bushes, buckthorn, oaks, arbutus (not very frequently), rosemary, grow, marine fennel, "saladina", rush, hurdle, etc.
Fauna: rabbits, hedgehogs, weasels, partridges, turtledove, ringdove, the Mediterranean turtle (protected species), small lizard, bush-snake.
Son Real is also rich in prehistoric remains.
Excursions on foot or on horseback from Ca´n Picafort are recommended.
