Puerto de Pollensa

39 54.2 N - 3 05.0 W

This is one of the prettiest resorts on the north coast. Puerto Pollensa curves around a magnificent bay sprinkled with yachts and fishing boats and has a stunning backdrop of the Sierra De Tramuntana Mountains. This former fishing village has lost little of its traditional charm. This resort is a good base for exploring northern Mallorc - including the rugged headland of Formentor, where cliffs plunge dramatically into the sea.

Puerto de Pollensa is the port for the town of Pollensa, about 6 kilometers inland. The port is a tourist town with hotels and restaurants along the seaside, broad sandy beaches, and a good variety of grocery stores, hardware stores, and boat repair services, as well as a take-away and cafe that has a book exchange.

The dramatic setting of the wide bay fringed by the mountains to the north and west, the sandy beaches, the well-sheltered anchorages, the large breakwater housing the public docks, an elegant Club Nautico, fuel dock, and modern repair yard with heavy duty travel lift, all contribute to making this an idyllic full service location for cruisers.

Puerto de Pollenca offers a myriad of small cafes, bars and restaurants, all offering local specialities. Personal favourites include the Restaurant Nautico and Restaurant Stay locatated on the two jetties in the harbour and both offer good local seafood. There's a weekly market in the town and a large SYP supermarket on the approach into the town.

Inland from the port is the old town of Pollenca which is a favourite artistic haunt. The 365 steps of Calvario will not only provide you with plenty of exercise, but your exertions will be amply rewarded by the breath taking views of pretty mountains and villages with the magnificent Bay of Pollensa beyond.

Restaurants tend to come and go here, but C'an Ferrat, a tiny restaurant on Calle Sant Pere, (last turning on right before the sea front roundabout off Juan XXIII street) seems to endure. The food is good; the price is right and it's run by a couple of good-looking brothers!  (Having found Calle Sant Pere, do go into the bakery on the corner to buy ensaimadas and empanadas.  Also try the El Pozo tapas bar for good tapas albeit in a utilitarian bar atmosphere.

The large bay of Pollensa is extremely picturesque, if not particularly deep in places. A detailed chart should always be consulted. The Club Nautico itself is chic and popular, and all facilities, including the pool, are open to visiting yachtsmen. There are approximately 75 berths along the outer wall which are rented out during the summer season; it is also possible to anchor nearby. The port is a flourishing tourist area with restaurants and bars galore, along with sailing schools, charter companies and every kind of nautical service. The ancient town of Pollensa itself is 3 km inland.
