Marinas |
Marinas are expensive for the average yachtsman. Try one and you will look for free anchorages ever after.
As usual in the Med, you normally moor with bowanchor and sternrope in the harbours. Of course, the marinas have mooringchains, which you as well fix at the bow.
In the mostly sandy bays of the Balearics, you normally anchor free, without sternropes. Just in narrow corridors like for example Cala Pi, we recommend sternropes. If you have enough room, in some bays in Menorca, especially on the southcoast, it is as well wise to keep the boat in the swell, using sternanchor or ropes.Winds
Mallorca normally offer a steady weather in the summer, but after all, do not trust in it. There is always the danger of strong Mistrals and Tramontanas. And, in summer 2000, there were a lot of wind (too much) and clouds....also not usual for that area.
As they are islands, every coastal area has got its own wind, capes increase the wind. So, for example, in Palma bay, you mainly have southwesterly winds in settled weather, no matter what the other areas may have... The wind awakes in the morning, blows over the day in various strength and normally dies at afternoon... in settled weather, do not calculate with this!!
The main wind is a N, Tramontana (called Mistral in Lyon, Maestral at Costa Brava), which blows dry and cold from the french coast, often stormy. If there is a bft. 8 or 9 in Lyon, still bft. 7 arrives mainly in Menorca. The more you head south, the less wind arrives from that direction, but always take care of this wind, it´s a beast!
But, if you are in a sheltered bay, he sometimes helps to stand the heat, for he brings cool winds; skys are clear and blue, when he blows and sun shines.
In contrast to Tramontana, the southwind, in his strongest form called Scirrocco, is a hot, dumpy wind, coming from the Sahara, blowing along the northcoast of Africa and turning to east towards the Med.
He announces himself with a darkyellow stripe at the horizon and carries a lot of sand, you will not recognize your deck afterwards......It needs hours, to get this darkyellow dirt off!!
The southwind normally starts dry in Africa, but on his way to the Balearics, he gets more and more humid, so if he blows, you feel like in a dumpy hairdresser´s salon.
Grace Rasumus, the windgod, he is not blowing very often and long!
Levante is called the eastwind, coming if there is a depression between the Balearics and Africa. He normally comes 8-10 times a year in storm strength.
Normally, you should have moderate winds in that region, normally. In the last years, as anywhere else in the world, we have learned not to trust the rules, they have changed a lot, so aswell here in that area.
So, take care of weatherreports and listen to CH16, where you will get gailwarnings, as usual. Navtex aswell sends gailwarnings, not always in right time....
Also look at the clouds! A good sign for an immediately starting Tramontana/Mistral are cigarshaped clouds. If you see them, hurry up into the next harbour, this wind is able to produce short waves of 2-4m in a VERY short time!!

This royal yacht club was founded in 1948 making it the oldest in the Balearics. It is situated near the centre of town and offers good security with easy access for all nautical goods and services. There is a full service yard within the club itself for yachts up to about 50tn. For larger yachts there are plentiful facilities at some of the other yards in the bay. The club sports a pleasant swimming pool and outside bar area, plus an excellent restaurant. It is the base for some of Spain's most prestigious regattas such as the King's Cup and the Princess Sofia Trophy, in which many members of the Spanish Royal Family frequently participate. |

The jurisdiction of Palma Port Authority for mooring fees extends from the end of the Club de Mar until the Muelle Viejo with a couple of exceptions. The first moorings after the Club de Mar are for long stay boats, this is followed by the first pontoon, known as La Cuarentena, which has 56 berths. The second pontoon (known as El Mediterraneo) has recently been acquired by the company and has 72 berths. This company also has a floating pontoon opposite the Cathedral, although there are few services other than water and electricity, this area has the advantage of being almost in the heart of the city, yet in a very tranquil area with a Guardia Civil post close by providing good security. When coming into the port of Palma you will need to lay an anchor when going stern-to any of the berths along the front, North of El Mediterraneo pontoon. Tie up at any appropriate berth and wait for one of the Port Authority's representatives to arrive and discuss charges. If you wish to stay for a long period of time it is best to go directly to the Port Authority Offices at the Muelle Viejo, 19 (first floor) to discuss prices and location. Fuel is available from the fishing quay just round the corner from the Real Club Nautico, or from the Club de Mar. | |||||||||||||||||||||||

yachts. The full gamut of nautical services are available here, from
innumerable brokerages to excellent chandleries, bars and restaurants.
Smaller craft can be provided with undercover storage, and all other

It's a good idea to contact the port captain by telephone or on VHF

port can get very full.

The entrance to the port of Soller is well marked by the lighthouses at Cabo Gros and Punta de Sa Creu. This harbour forms the only real bolthole on the northwest coast of Mallorca, although care should be taken when entering in a strong North or North-Easterly wind. The first two jetties belong to the naval base and are for their exclusive use, but a few boats can go stern-to at the town quay where it is possible to pick up water (in the mornings) and fuel. Otherwise, anchor in sand and mud in the bay itself. Provisions can be obtained in the port, but there is also a regular tram service to the town of Soller (3 km away) where there is an excellent market in the mornings, plus all other shops and services. The tram ends at the station where there is a regular train service to Palma. |

Although there can be a surge in this harbour, particularly with E or SE winds, the marina and quays are always popular in the summer so you should have contingency plans in mind in case no space is available. The Club berths are only for craft up to about 12 metres, but space can be found along the public quay for larger yachts of up to 20 metres. Puerto Andraitx offers a full range of nautical services, and has many excellent bars and restaurants. The Club de Vela has a limited number of berths for cruising yachtsmen, and many boats try to find a space on the town quay or the pontoon opposite. During settled weather it is possible to anchor in the outer harbour, but the holding is poor due to excess weed coverage. If a storm does blow up and you are unable to get your anchor to hold it is possible to seek shelter in the inner, fishermen's, harbour where the bottom is glutinous mud, but you will be told to move directly the bad weather is over. The marina at Porto Petro is small with room for yachts only up to 12m in length. However, it backs onto bars, restaurants and shops with telephones nearby. This quiet town is an attractive backdrop for the marina. A deposit of 2,000 pesetas is required when using electricity or water in this port. For larger craft it is possible to anchor in the bay. Due to a flash flood seven years ago there were a great many large tree branches strewn around the seabed, so that use of a trip-line on the anchor was recommended, but by now this is not usually a problem as only the occasional branch remains. Club Med, who have a holiday complex behind the beach here, are attempting to make the beach a private one and to ban visiting yachts from landing. However, to have private beaches is impossible in Spain and any attempts to persuade you otherwise should be met with a polite refusal to leave. |

The Club has a swimming pool, showers and a bar as well as the restaurant. If you are unable to find a berth in the Club Nautico, the town quay opposite may have space for a yacht of up to 20 metres. It used to be possible to berth stern-to at the old quay, which extends outwards from the marina, however the bollards have recently been removed rendering this impossible. There is a certain amount of room to anchor near the beach, but this can be a very rolly option in all but the most settled weather. On many charts this harbour is referred to as Cala Manacor, and although many of the tourists are from other parts of Europe, there are a considerable number of local holidaymakers which leaves the town itself with a more authentic feel than many of the other tourist spots. |

The two floating pontoons near the fishing quay now offer showers as well as water and electricity, but they can become untenable in strong SW winds. There is limited space for a few yachts to go stern-to at the public quay, and some yachts can also anchor in the bay.
