Magaluf |
Situated just off the motorway, some 8 miles west of Palma, Magaluf is probably Majorca' s best known resort. Together with neighbouring Torrenova, Magaluf registers an annual tourist influx of 620,000.
This fine resort has acquired an undeserved notoriety in the press, which at times seems bent on writing Magaluf off as a beery, working-class playground.
It's true that Magaluf has a very lively nightlife, with macro discotheques such as BCM (famous even before one of the Spice Girls worked there), plenty of music bars (The Prince William, Cupido...), and English-style pubs (The Eastenders, Rovers Return...) open till the early hours of the morning, and that a number of the less mature British visitors - unaccustomed to such a free and easy atmosphere - occasionally become excessively boisterous. But tourists are also attracted to this resort by its clean, well-kept streets, immaculate sandy beaches, clear blue sea, and pine-covered mountain environs. Magaluf, more than any of its neighbouring resorts, is responsible for making the whole municipal area of Calvia the richest in Europe, and the local tourist authorities do everything possible to maintain its popularity.
