Cala San Vincente |
Cala San Vicente, one of the lesser known resorts on Mallorca and without a doubt the best kept secret. Cala San Vicente is situated in the north of the Island, it takes about one hour from the airport to drive to the resort, and the drive itself gives the visitor a taste of all the delights of Mallorca, driving through the small villages and through delightful forests and then, the wonderful journey through the rugged mountains until finally, you arrive in this small, peaceful town.
If you want bright lights, disco's and casinos stay away, but if you want tranquillity, peace and undisturbed rest, then this is the place to be. One of the hotels in Cala San Vicente is the Hotel Don Pedro. Walk out of this hotel and you are on the beach, fine golden sand which gently slopes into the turquoise sea, this is ideal for all the family and the view is breath-taking, the cove (Cala) is framed by majestic mountains on both sides as you look out to the Mediterranean Sea.
Another pleasure, for first timers or the experienced, is the snorkelling, take a bread roll with you and feed all the different varieties of fish which soon attach themselves to you, or snorkel out to the coral reef about fifty meters from the beach. The resort itself is a delight to discover, with only a few restaurants, which cater for everyone at very reasonable prices. There are only a few bars which to be honest, are not the noisy or busy bars you find in the busier resorts but a place to unwind and relax. Go on, treat yourself to Cala San Vicente, but remember its a secret, only tell your closest friends.Cala San Vicente is actually 3 calas (coves): Cala Barques, Cala Clara and Cala Molins. The first one you arrive at is Cala Barques - if you're lucky you'll be able to park your car here in the little semi-circular car park - then walk down the steps past the fishermen's houses to it. It's a picturesque little cove, although does tend to have a problem with tar (butter removes it from feet!).
From this cove you can walk around the path to the tiny Cala Clara. You can drive (or walk) to Cala Molins by ignoring the car park at Cala Barques and following the road round to the right. Turn left at the T-junction and following the headland road round. It's possible to walk to a further cove - Cala Carbo - by following the coast.
Apart from the beaches there is not much else here - souvenir/beach shops, a couple of hotels and some apartments/villas and a few restaurants. Of these, worth making a trip for is C'al Patrol on the steps down to Cala Barques: just the place for paella for Sunday lunch.
