On the south east coast sits the exclusive resort of Cala D'or. On the southeast coast, 40 miles southeast of Palma, (less than one hour's drive) and Airport by fairly slow road. Cala d'Or is small and sophisicated and attracts many visitors, although it is quite hilly with many ups and downs, which may not suit elderly or people with walking disabilities.

Bordered by several small sandy coves like Cala Ferrera and Cala Esmeralda, which are separated by narrow wooded headlands. The village boasts many shops, bars and restaurants. There are also a few discos but nightlife is generally low key.

Seven fine sandy beaches all within the radius of one mile are dotted between whitewashed villas with pretty gardens touching the turquoise waters of the sea below.

The centre of Cala D'or with its pretty pedestrian precinct, excellent selection of shops, superb restaurants and open-air bars, draws you particularly in the evening when it takes on such a romantic feel.

Cala d'Or was originally designed as an artist colony by José Costa in the 1930's. It has grown somewhat since but the original 40 villas are still there and their moorish design has been followed as a standard in the town. The coastline of this area is of high cliff broken by calas giving a number of quiet swimming places with sandy beaches. For a pleasant quiet time you will find this is the place.

The coves of Cala dOr are good for anchoring in the daytime, if you can find room. They are ideal places for studying the human sardines packed together on the beach... Added to this is the fact that this harbour is a sort of El Dorado for motor boats: they set off at top speed in the morning, go all around the area (to the south) of Cala Santanyí (to the north) to Calas de Mallorca, with all the side effects which we yachtsmen and women so love (whizzing past at full speed just a few centimetres away, the din of turbines all over the cove, etc.).

Marina Cala d’Or is a modern, expensive resort development.

The marina is actually situated in Cala Llonga, which is well protected from all winds except a strong Easterly. A channel of green and red buoys mark the entrance to this popular port. There are plenty of shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants near the harbour, which is in an active tourist area. The marina can become crowded in summer, so it is best to telephone or call on VHF Channel 9 in advance of arrival. When you do arrive, there is almost invariably a marinero available who will help you tie up. Good hardstanding and a full spectrum of nautical services make this a pleasant port in which to effect any repairs necessary.
