Albufera national park |
The park is located right at one of CaŽn Picafort, in the centre of the Bay of Alcudia. Its extension is of 1.708,75 hectares with a coasline of 1,45 Km. (beach and dunes).
This Humid Area is included in the RAMSAR list (Humid Areas of international importance). It is an Area of special protection for the birds (ZEPA). Until today more than 200 species of birds have been observed. The mammals are of small size. The vegetation is less varied, the most exceptional plant being the grass orchid.
Historically "La Albufera" was probably well known and used since prehistoric times. There is also evidence of Arab farmhouses in the area. The name "SŽAlbufera" is of Arab origin, "Albuhayra" meaning lagoon. We have many testimonies of medieval times, after the Catalan conquest, that tell us about the use of "La Albufera" for hunting and fishing, generally reserved for the King and the nobility.
From Ca'n Picafort, you can visit the Park by bicycle since the road has a special lane for bicycles. However, it is also possible to make this trip using tracks through the interior of the Park.
