Overview

Sailing in Latvia

In addition to its three major ports, Liepaja, Riga and Ventspils, Latvia has seven smaller ones – Salacgriva, Skulte, Lielupe, Engure, Mersrags, Roja and Pavilosta. These are all fishing ports which, after restoration of Latvia’s independence, became engaged in international transshipping and sea tourism.

Ports are important not just as commercial enterprises but also as docking areas for yachts. Every year the number of yachts that enter Latvia’s ports increases.

Mersrags

Harbour map

The harbour is surrounded by piers, and there is no difficulties approaching the harbour.
Riga

By VHF you can establish radio contact with the traffic control (Riga Radio 9) at ch 16 and 9.

Riga is the capital of Latvia and is an old Hansa-town. The town is situated a bit upstream the river Daugava.

To enter Riga you first have to sail up the river Daugava. It is no problem to sail upstream. There is plenty of space on the mighty river, but at the inlet you have piers and the space is more limited.

There are many yacht clubs in Riga, but some of them are situated far from the city. We recommend the club at the east side of the river, "Andrej Osta" (Andrej port), a small harbour behind the ferry terminal. (If you miss it you soon find yourself at the large bridge crossing river Daugava inside the town).

Fishing and commercial port in the eastern part of Riga Bay, in the estuary of river Salaca.

Approach is no problem, port chimneys are clearly visible. Pass the fishing port and there is a new jetty for 6-8 yachts with a depth of 2 m.

No service at jetty, but several stores and a restaurant nearby.

This marina was opened in August 1998. Data are not yet known, but the picture might give the visitor a feeling for what can be expected.

Liepaja

The approach to Liepaja is simple. The port is guarded by a huge half-circle formed pier. In the pier you find gates in different directions. Look out for buoys in the middle of the gates!

Inside the pier, you steer SE towards the S. base of the pier. There you find the inlet to the river. Follow the river upstream to "the end", townbridge. On the starboard side you find some places prepared for yachts. You are now in the center of the town. The guest harbour is guarded day and night. We didn't experience any security problems. Passport control is done at the yacht club. Near the quay you find showers and WC's in the basement of a nearby building.

Pavilosta

56°54 N

21°10 E

Sailing to Pavilosta is plain high sea navigation. Hard wind from W, NW to N can make it impossible to approach. Minimum depth in harbour: 3 m.

Small fishing harbour between Liepaja and Ventspils. Sheltered from all winds. The harbour is some distance upstream from a river estuary.

The village is picturesque with old, quite will kept houses. Long sandy beaches. Small fishing industry and shipping of lumber.

Facilities:

small shipyard (mainly dealing with repair of fishing boats), small shop and cafe, diesel, water. Customs clearence. Small museum

Ventspils       There is an urgent need for dredging the port entrance channel, as well as for new dredging at some piers. During recent years, dredging has been carried out several times within the harbour.

The port facilities and the offshore part of the port are situated in the area of the Venta estuary. There are 2 jetties (the Northern and the Southern ones). The length of the entrance channel is ca 5.5 km, the depth is, at present, slightly over 17 m. The port becomes shallower all the time
