Eating in Jurmala

Jurmala's dining scene has greatly improved with the opening of an Indian bistro and an Italian pizzeria and it is much cheaper then Riga. Hundreds of street cafés line the main street connecting the districts of Majori and Dzintari. In summer they are rivalling with deafening disco music.

Information

Barbara   Jomas 66/3, (entrance from Jauna), tel. (+371) 776 22 01

This dimly-lit restaurant, whose interior is decorated with Iberian landscapes, could probably pass for Spanish, but the cuisine, with the exception of the paella and a few other dishes, is mostly Baltic.

Buca   Majori, Omnibusa 23, tel. (+371) 776 13 09

Latvian and Mexican food all night long!

Chic little café offering pizza.

Habana   Majori, Jomas 66, tel. (+371) 776 23 01

Located next to the Spanish restaurant, the Latin-amerikas Klubs dishes out inexpensive, home-made burritos and tacos.

Haizivs un bullis (Shark and Bull)   Bulduri, Bulduru prosp. 31, tel. (+371) 776 41 75

An amazingly original upmarket restaurant with driftwood for chandeliers, Native American dream catchers hanging from the fireplaces and sharks' jaws and pictures of unfortunate matadors on the walls. Excellent steaks, both bovine and marine!

Juras Zakis (The Sea Rabbit)   Bulduri, Vienibas prosp. 1, tel. (+371) 775 30 05

A cosy beachside restaurant with a boat hanging over the bar and fishing nets dangling from the ceiling. Tasty Baltic cuisine and, of course, local fish dishes. One of Jurmala's most popular hangouts.

Orients & Orients - Sultans   Jomas 86; Jomas 33, tel. (+371) 776 44 73

Not unlike their sister restaurant Orients in Riga, these places serve Caucasian and Russian dishes, as well as seafood. Watch them grill your shashlik while you wait.
"The new Orients is a great improvement on the original one. Plenty of seating upstairs if it looks too crowded - unless, of course, someone's hired upstairs for a party. A good range of (mostly Georgian) wines, which you can try by the glass. The service is fast and friendly - still something of a rarity outside the top places in Riga. Highly recommended.

Pinguin (Ice Cream)   Majori, Jomas 48, tel. (+371) 776 22 22

A wide selection of delicious ice cream.
