THE MARINA GATE
The Marina pond is maintained at a level of 5 metres (16.5ft) above
chart datum by means of a sill gate. Depth gauges and light signals
clearly show when entry and exit are possible. Green light for entry,
Red light for exit and Red and Green lights together — Marina Closed.
This can be taken as 3 hours each side of high water, the actual period
differing slightly with Springs and Neaps. A digital gauge showing the
depth of water (in metres) above the sill gates is situated at the
entrance to the Marina.
ENTRY TO THE MARINA
When the Marina is accessible, craft will be directed by the Pierhead
Control signals—and also the Harbour control dories at peak
periods—to transit the Commercial harbour and proceed to the area
reserved for visiting craft. Craft arriving when the sill gate is closed
or when the main harbour is closed to pleasure craft for the movement of
commercial traffic should proceed to the Yacht Basin which is situated
on the starboard hand immediately before the Victoria Pierhead. Entry to
La Collette Yacht Basin is available at all states of tide.
HOLDING AREAS
At La Collette Yacht Basin there is alongside mooring for up to 60
yachts. There is also a large holding pontoon to port of the Marina
entrance at the head of the Commercial Harbour. When access to the
Marina is possible, the Marina Attendants will assist visiting craft to
transit the commercial harbour when as previously mentioned, the
Pierhead Signals must be closely observed.
VISITING CRAFT: BERTHS
Visitors are normally accommodated on Piers A,D, E, F and G which are in
the northern part of the Marina. Pier D & E have individual finger
pontoons suitable for craft up to 11 metres in length and Piers F and G
are used for alongside berthing, craft Iying 2 or 3 deep if necessary.
The depth in the Marina is a minimum of 6ft with an area of 9 ft depth
in the vicinity of the entrance and Pier A. Craft whose draught is over
6ft or is over 12m long should therefore advise the Duty Attendant on
arrival so that a suitable berth may be allocated on Pier A.
Since
the following three marinas are all situated within the commercial port of
St. Helier, traffic through the area particularly at peak shipping times
has to be closely controlled. Visiting craft are therefore advised to
keep a listening watch on Channel 14 VHF when approaching St. Helier and
with the introduction of several high speed commercial craft a careful
lookout must be kept. Please note that channel M (VHF Marina frequency)
is not used in St. Helier. |
