Cowes |
Cowes lies at the heart of the sailing scene on the south coast of the UK. The Solent, the broad stretch of sheltered water between the island and the mainland, is the country's busiest waterway with cruise liners like the QE2, Oriana, Arkadia, Aurora, and Saga Princess regularly coming into Southampton as their homeport. The main deep channel passes along the front of Cowes at Prince Consort buoy and the Parade at Cowes provides a wonderful ship spotters vantage point for the many commercial container ships and oil tankers which pass on their way to Southampton.
Cowes has long been regarded as the premier yachting centre in Britain. For almost 175 years Cowes has been host to the organisers of major yachting events, as well as being a busy trading port and shipbuilding centre, becoming one of the most fashionable resorts in the country. It is predominantly Victorian in style and the main shopping areas and side streets contain some elegant buildings both pre and post that era. Visitors can be lost for hours wandering up the picturesque streets to the grounds of Northwood House and park. Whilst a visit to the Library and Maritime Museum reveals the greatest number of maritime books to be found anywhere.
During this time six yacht clubs have been established in the management of events for every type of boat - both sail and power along with a number of Class Associations. It is the home of one of the most senior yacht clubs in the country, The Royal Yacht Squadron as well as the popular Island Sailing Club. The Royal London and Royal Corinthian Yacht Clubs also have start lines and The Junior Offshore Group start line is close to Egypt Point. Go to Yachtclubs for more information.
Cowes is made up of two parts, West Cowes and East Cowes, situated either side of the River Medina. They are linked by the "floating bridge" which is a car carrying chain ferry operating throughout the day and evening. Free to foot passengers and a small charge for cars and other vehicles.East Cowes beach, at the head of the River Medina Estuary, provides the holiday and yachting resort of Cowes with a well used recreational area. The beach is very popular with residents and visitors alike. The facilities on the seafront provide traditional holiday requirements for a promenade and woodland walks, children's play area and a grand vista of Cowes harbour with all its yachting activities.
The home of yachting, Cowes is famed around the world and in particular the first week of August sees the famous Cowes Week when hundreds of yachts and thousands of sailors arrive to race and party. It is a truly wonderful spectacle and in the past was adorned by the presence of Royal Yacht Britannia.
Cowes sits astride the River Medina at the northern tip of the Island. The main industries apart from tourism are shipbuilding, aircraft components and Radar systems. The entrance to Cowes harbour is dominated by the famous Royal Yacht Squadron, housed in what was the original Cowes Castle. The polished brass cannons that came from William IV yacht Royal Adelaide are still used to start the yacht races and are much admired. Further on from the Squadron is Prince's Green which was given to Cowes by George Stephenson the famous railway engineer. The house where he lived has since been knocked down and is now Grantham Court.
Cowes High Street is now mainly a pedestrian precinct and there are many interesting shops to browse whilst wandering through the narrow streets.
West Cowes is linked to East Cowes by a chain ferry across the River Medina, The High Speed Passenger Ferry Terminal is in West Cowes, and the car ferry is in East cowes.

The Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club was established in 1952 by the late "Tiny" Mitchell as a club for local yachtsmen. It has evolved, largely through the voluntary labours of its members, to become a popular venue for both racing and cruising yachtsmen. The club can provide marina berths and shoreside boat storage facilities for its members and guests. The approach by sea to the club, situated on the west bank of the Medina, is made by turning to starboard after passing the southernmost pontoon of Cowes Yacht Haven and the club pontoons are directly ahead. |

East Cowes Sailing Club was founded in 1912 "to encourage sailing, good sportsmanship, youth training, racing, fishing and other boating activities". The Club provides its members with inside storage and hard standing for small yachts, motorboats, sailing dinghies and tenders. It has drying out mud berths with slipway and pontoon landing at all states of the tide. Its social side centres around its Thursday evening racing and its sailors have earned good reputations by winning events as diverse as Cowes Weeks, CCRC, Admirals Cup to Island dinghy meetings. |

The Royal London Yacht Club was founded in London in 1836 and its first meeting place was the Coal Hole Tavern on the Strand. Now, as befits one of Europe's senior yacht clubs, the Royal London is located in the centre of Cowes waterfront where it has been since 1882. A majority of its current members live or work in the Capital. This long history, as a principal element of British yachting, is a matter of great pride to the members of the Club, although its desire to maintain past traditions is balanced by an active and progressive new membership. |
